Something we need to consider about the C8

If the C8 is this damned good out the gate, think of the future. Think of the monster the inevitable Z06 will be. Then think of how the ZR1 will fall into outright widowmaker territory.

This car will really be a game changer. It almost makes me forget about the Ford GT. Almost.

In 20 years, the Ford GT will be worth a million dollars and the C8 will be the base of every kit car on the road.

You’re not wrong. But it just goes to show you how naive, or cynical, we have become.

Ford: “This is limited, we’re only going to make 500 (or whatever), and its going to cost $300k”

Everyone: Gets out checkbooks “This is going to be an investment!”

GM: Releases a car with equal performance, “We’ll make as many of these as y’all want, and they start at the same price as a nice pickup truck! ”

Everyone: Kit car jokes!!!!!

There’s a Ford GT? How do you buy one?

Do n’t get me wrong, I’d rather have the Ford GT but it’s no bargain . The Corvette is going to be faster, especially once boost gets applied to the engine. But the GT was designed to be a homologation car, which you just rarely see these days. It’s slower than it could have been because Ford knew BOP would just nerf it anyway, so they put in a smaller engine. The goal was LeMans, not being the fastest thing on the street.

A t $60k, the C8 Corvette is going to be eating everyone’s lunch. Why the hell would you buy anything else? There’s no rational reason to if pure speed is your goal. Nothing will be quicker on the street than a base C8 and on trac k, the Z06 and ZR1 will be able to hang with anything out there.

What a glorious time to be alive!

And agreed, the GT is a special car. I’m a GM guy so I’d rather have a ‘Vette but I would totally park a GT in my stable. Such a great, storied history there.

But the thing about the C8 that’s amazing is its making that kind of performance available to just about everyone. A $60k car is a little bit out of my budget right now , but in a few years it won’t be. And I would damn sure consider buying one.

As a random aside, I wonder if this is part of the reason GM is letting the Camaro expire?

The C 8 looks amazing for the price . I can’t believe this thing is $60k- maybe options will rack that price up quickly, but even at $70k for a reasonably equiped Z71 it’s going to kill everything on the market. It’s not as light as the carbon fiber tub cars, but it’s still damn impressive for what it is.

Is GM killing the Camaro? For ~$60k I can’t imagine walking past the C8 for a Camaro ZL1, but the regular Camaro just needs a serious redesign ( and better visibility) to sell better. The chassis is great.

The rumor has been that the 6th gen is set to expire in 2023 and there is no replacement planned. GM cites poor sales.

But no wonder when the customers complain about visibility and rather than address that in the mid-cycle refresh, you make it HIDEOUS. Seriously, who thought that facelift was a good idea? The designer and every manager above them who okay’d it ought to be slapped.

And then they release this AMAZING C8!

I guess consistency just isn't GMs thing.

That would be sad. The Camaro w ould sell very well if they improved the weak points instead of making ‘5th gen 2.0'. They built on their strengths and made a damn fast car, but that’s not enough for the Camaro- maybe it is for the Z Corvettes, but not the Camaro. That’s why the Challenger is eating their lunch, and the more well rounded Mustang is too . They’re just better to live with. The Camaro needs to compete with the Corvette in the Chevy dealership, and people who just want a fast car and to hell with ergonomics, visibility and comfort will buy the ‘ Vette.

But GM always bails out when things don’t go their way. GM styling has gone down the drain since Ed Welbern left, and it’s a shame. The C8 looks good but everything else is just awful.

Consistency has never been GMs thing. That’s why they have the reputation they do- the people that bought their good cars love them, everyone else hates GM cars. The Corvette has been a relatively consistent entity, but even it has had a few fumbles with the C3- 6 interior and the C7 overheating problems.
