Depends on what kind of work it’s had done. The early ones used the wretched 6.2L, later ones had the somewhat better 6.5L. I'm not sure if the military ever adopted the 6.5L Turbo. But both 6.2L and early 6.5L engines had block problems, head problems, cooling issues, etc.  A lot of the fixes were developed with the 6.5L Turbo engine for the GM commercial trucks, then back fitted to some Hummers.  Also depends on what number IP its in and how many times the injectors have been replaced.

That strikes me a likely being from the era that still had only a 3-speed auto in them. There were a few of those still around the comm school in 29 stumps when I got the license, and one afternoon I had the misfortune of driving it out to Amboy and back . Perhaps the only way to make one of those worse to drive is for it to be a 3-speed.

I think that is probably an early 6.2L/3-speed truck. The only way to make them worse to drive was the 3-speed. The did use the 6.5L turbo on the much later up- armored trucks of say, post 2006ish. They did make some nice turbo noises, but they also weighed more than twice what the original did, continued rocking when they came to a stop and had about half the range.

This is why i want to get one of these now. I feel like the values are gonna go nuts if/when they stop selling them.

That makes me cringe just thinking about it. I have no direct HMMWV experience to speak of, but my folks had a GMC 2500 with the 6.5 Turbo and a 4L80 auto and it was a good, competent truck. We were lucky in that ours had very few issues other than repeated PMD failures until we relocated it.

But I can imagine how horrible a non-turbo, 3 speed would be.  And I know ours was great but you could feel it work hard pulling a gooseneck trailer with 2 horses, Im sure the up-armor HMMWVs struggled similarly.

The problem with the 3-speed trucks is that driving them above 40mph was a deeply unpleasant experience . Overdrive gave you to about 55mph before they became deeply unpleasant .

With the turbo, the armored trucks weren’t particularly under powered . The problems were how short the fuel range became and the sheer weight of them. It took what was originally a ~6000lbs truck in something like the M998 above and turned it into something that weighed just shy of 14,000lbs, on the same platform. It is a good thing we primarily used them driving across open desert, because they’re good for little else. Put another way, a 4" lift kit and some taller tires on a Tahoe would get you about 90% of the off-road capability of an up-armor HMMWV. The older, vastly lighter trucks were far more capable as off-road machines.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that experience.

I had a professor at college who did vehicle testing for the Army at Aberdeen. Witness one of his tests. I believe this was an armored Humvee variant :
