Late ‘30s South Bend 13-inch.

The condition is very good and the price is about as low as working metal-turning lathes go. I already have a project for it that’ s farm related, but if anyone has ideas for learner projects, let me know! I just spent a bunch on tooling... So I’ ve got carbide and hss cutters.

Punches are always a good intro project. That was one of the projects I did for  a class in my e ngineering degree.

Gives you some experience with speeds and feeds. Also, it’s an excuse to pick up a knurling tool...

I’m looking for a welding table. The one I really would like is $2300 which seems spendy for a 2'x4' table.

Are you machining parts on the lathe? I've never used one, but it looks like a really tool to know how to use.

yeah, I looked at welding tables and nearly fell off my chair . I guess there is a lot of metal in there... needless (i think) to say I still don’t have one. This lathe is going to be under $1700 with all new tools and a VFD to drive the 3-phase motor included. I’ll be re-boring a few unobtanium pulleys for an old tedder as a first job, and then learning as I go.

The quick-change tool post set I ordered (the seller is keeping his and he sold the original lantern-style tool post) comes with a knurling tool :)

Does it have a threader?

That's a big boi.

Oooh, I’m jelly!

I figure the only way I'll get a metal lathe is if I make my own.

I mperial pitch ratios only :| The conversion gear set for metric threads is a bit spendy :/ I may eventually invest in them, but I can buy a lot of taps and dies for what the gears cost.

It’s only about 800lbs, and 6 feet long overall . I passed on a similarly priced 16" unit because it was just too damn big (slightly over a ton! ) .

You have many practice shift knobs ahead of you. Because farm machinery has many knobs...

hahaha, that’ s a project and a three-quar ters. If you do make your own, I think you could pretty much own all the bragg ing rights.

Scene : Machinist’s Bar: After hours. young student orders beer and eff u s es to bar- tender how he/she just made their first project and how excited they are about it. Old men at nearby table take note, walk over and begin bragging/yarning about the tooling and difficult projects they’ve made and how the youngster has a long way to go

cue camera cut to dark end of bar: BaconSandwich loudly sips an unknown but complicated looking cocktail. E veryone looks at them questioningly.

BaconSandwich: “I made my own lathe from scratch.” sips cock tail again.

Bar is Silent.

Old men fade into shadow.

youngster guzzles beer, hurriedly pays and walks nervously out.

BaconSandwich sips cock tail again.

Nice! That sounds really cool.

I have a small table, but I need something longer  and I’d love one with holes for clamps. It’s hard to imagine paying that kind of money though.

There was a good article on Hackaday a few weeks ago... and someone I know does have a few parts that would come in handy...

https://hackaday.com/2019/06/09/assembling-a-lathe-from-not-a-lot/

I mean, I didn't say I'd do a good job of it...

A metal lathe can certainly handle wood. The tooling/cutters are different, but wood is MUCH easier to cut than steel, it’s pretty triv ial to set up a chisel-rest, or even buy wood-cutter carbide inserts for metal t ool holders... or just cut with the metal cutting tools and plan on doing a bunch of sanding.

F air enough ;) I’ ve made enough of my own tools/machines to know that if I made something like that I’d just end up using it make a better lathe, and by the time I’m done I could have just bought this one ;)
