I can officially knock driving a manual 911 off my bucket list.

I was surprised to find it livable for a sports car of this caliber. Compared to Corvettes of this era with harsh clutches and cramped interiors, this feels like my  Lexus.

I’ve driven 3 manual 911s, I found the clutches to be intrusively heavy.

So, what’s the cost of an IMS repair, and what’s the current value of this car?

That’s because your cars’ clutches are relatively light. =)

The cost of an IMS repair is to buy a 996 turbo instead since they never had the problem in the first place.

This must have felt like butter if you find C5 clutches harsh.

Tbf I’ve only driven the Z06

That 911 is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $17-20k. The IMS solution is about $3-4k for the repair, depending on the shop. A bit more if you want a new RMS and clutch while they’re in there.

With the M96 cars, I’d just consider it routine maintenance.

Nice!  I’ve never driven a 996 - my 911 experience is 997 and 991.  My bucketlist is checking off ownership on one.  Someday.

That’s really Porsche in general. They are expensive when new, but they are very capable, comfortable,  all-around sports cars.  If you’re feeling spendy, you can even make them luxurious.

I had an LN recommended shop do mine, it was $1800 including the qualification procedure. At the same time I did the clutch, rear main, cam chain pads, plugs, coils, plug tubes, bunch of gaskets and seals, flush the coolant and other misc stuff. $4500 or so for all of that. That car is probably in the $20k range for value.

There was a point about 2-3 years ago where the market seemed to *not* know that, and 996 Turbos got pretty cheap as a result.

Sadly however, it seems that is well known now.  Boooooooo

Nice! My son commented the other day that our 2001 C4 Cab is the most comfortable car we own. It really is a practical livable everyday driver. Very comfortable, 20ish MPG, big trunk and a back seat that works for kids or fold it down for luggage.

Interesting, I’ll have to drive one! I’ve only taught other people how to drive stick using GM clutches due to how easy they are, at least in my experience.

Not compared to any Japanese car I've driven.

I will add, after driving the A3 in the UK and coming back to my 3, the clutch felt extremely heavy. I really only have the Porsches to compare to our cars to, as far as more expensive cars go. I don’t remember the Cayman I drove having a very heavy clutch.

The Cayman I drove had a fairly heavy clutch, but nothing compared with an Elise!

I had a C5Z and never found the clutch all that bad. Little heavier than modern stuff, but with good feel.

Interestingly enough, the throttle is what caused the most fatigue in stop and go traffic. The throttle is light and sensitive, which isn’t a good stop and go combo when you have 400 torque, so it required extra effort to be as smooth as I desired

And I've heard the exact opposite about Porsche clutches.

That’s a beautiful example of a 996 cabriolet

Like everything else they’ve gone up. I know not long ago you could get a sorted one for $30-35k

Yeah those cars were ridiculous bargains at those prices. We all should have bought one. Think they’re 50-60k now.

What sucks is everything I wanted but was too broke for 3-5 years ago because I was in engineering school is totally affordable at those prices now. So close but yet it doesn’t matter.
