Bad news first: my car got hit in a parking lot. Didn’t think it looked too bad but I got an estimate done yesterday and it’s over $1600. The lady that hit my car doesn’t speak much English so I’m gonna have a friend do translating for me.

Kinja'd!!!

The good news is all my parts for my new computer finally came in and I got it put together. Took hours and several different methods to get the bios updated but it finally took around 11 last night. It got too late for me to mess with windows. That’ll be a job for tonight.

Question, why do you need a translator past “give me your insurance documents”?

Just report it to her insurer and move on with the claim

They wanted to pay out of pocket so I thought I’d be nice enough to give them that option.

I wouldn’t. Seriously, value your time. Also, they may have an option to reimburse their insurer?

The insurer will have agreed rates/pricing with bodyshops and your life will be easier.

I would never entertain anything outside of notification of their insurer. Plus, they hit you, they are a higher risk and their premiums should  go up.

How did she do that? Did she  nail you and create the dent, then back up and then slightly side swipe you?

That’s a bummer on the car getting hit in that spot. There’s a lot going on right there in terms of surfaces/creases and ra di i. It’ll take a good body man some time working his magic to get it looking right.

This is my mentality as well but there are a lot of people who think like funktheduck

I am firmly in the camp of not even going through my own insurance. There isn’t any point if they are at fault and doing so can actually hurt your insurance rates because you utilized them to handle the issue (USAA may not give you certain discounts anymore for example).

It was obnoxious but I went through the other driver’ s insurance. Fo ught my case for about a week, escalating it each time. Requested they view the officers body cam and report. In the end, they essentially admitted their client (who had committed a hit and run) was lying and likely submitting false documents.

I mean, the officer looked at his car and found damage but the guy submitted photos to progressive that showed no damage. Kind of an obvious conflict there.

Generally, insurance “ punishment” for an at-fault collision here in CA costs somewhere around  $3k over 3 years, assuming you aren’t already on the hook for another one.

It’s unfortunate that this here driver can’t speak English, but if the damage looks like it’s under $2k I would immediately ask for a shop quote and pay for it out-of-pocket . Nicely, of course.

Good luck with Windows (and the car!). Fresh install? I’ll be doing the same on Thursday.

All new Ryzen build. Haven’t built a pc in around 15 years. Haven’t used windows beyond a little here or there in 7.

Similar story here, first AMD/ Ryzen build after coming from an Intel build 8 years ago .

I went with a b450 board which means I needed to do the flash first before my 3600x would work. Should’ve been simple but was a PITA

I took your advice and contacted their insurance directly

B450 here as well, but with a 2600.  From what I’ve been reading, I should be fine?  Hoping so.

You’re good. The issue is the older boards and new CPUs. If I wanted to spend as much on a board as I did on my cpu I could’ve gone X570 and been fine.

Cool, thanks!  How much did you spend on the 3600x if you don’t mind me asking?  I t seems like I’m always buying one gen behind which saves me some money but instills the feeling of inadequacy among the latest and greatest products . Such is the nature of PC building.

$250. I bought it before the reviews came out showing the 3600 was only a few percent slower in games. I don’t regret it though.

My gaming machine runs Win10, but I have Linux Mint 19.1 on my laptop which I actually use more day-to-day! Win10 has been pretty stable and trouble free though, for me.

How can someone be so bad at parking?

I have ladies in my life that could possibly do this. Call me a chauvinist pig, or I’m mansplaining or whatever, but I see it more in the women than the men. Perhaps its just that girls never played with cars when they were little or something. They don’t seem to get the “swing” on the turning end of the vehicle. Cars do not track true in a turn (unless you have 4 wheel steering of course) and they just don’t get it. I’m digging myself a hole I won’t get out of, so I will shut up. Shut up just as I do when my wife starts cutting the wheel before she has cleared her parking spot when there is 30 feet of clearance behind her.

I feel your pain at your car being damaged.  Both of my cars have damaged front ends from the female drivers in my family.  I’ll show myself out now.
