Kinja'd!!!

The city of Detroit has left me in awe at its combination of beauty and absolute desolation.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Saw The Raconteurs at the Masonic Temple in what was the most fun concert I’ve ever been to. Saw the glitz and glamor of downtown Detroit and the dystopian hellscape that would have made Ayn Rand wet with delight. We got chased out of the Packard plant by security company hired by people who are claiming to rehabilitate the facility, despite no noticeable progress made.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

We ate delicious food, drank amazing coffee, and had a few beers. We drove the 300, walked nearly 15 miles, and rode the delightfully shit People Mover. We finished the trip at the Henry Ford Museum.

I will be back someday and I hope Detroit can get its shit together.

It’s getting better here.  Lots of folks moving back into the city in areas.  But you really have to want to live in Detroit to do that.  Property taxes are stupid expensive and then you get doubly hit on income taxes if you’re a Detroit resident.  There is no incentive to actually move into the city proper unless you just have to have that urban feel.  But there is a lot of residential being built and rehabbed.

The 300 is absolutely the right call for that kind of trip.

I went to Detroit last summer, it has changed a lot over the past decade. Keeps getting better every time I go back.

It’s so weird being in a big city, urban environment without the masses of people. It’s funny how busy it gets around Ford Field or Comerica Park and then how dead it is when no games are played.

I grew up taking Chicago’s “ L” train through the city. So when I first rode the people mover, I was confused why it was so small. But, it really takes you to every key area in town for mere pennies. I like it; especially the now defunct Joe Louis stop, prime for avoiding the awful traffic around the arena.
