Almost killed somebody today, when they stepped into the street without looking only 20 or 30 feet in front of my car. Luckily the person behind them pulled them back and I was paying attention. The car stopped about five feet past where they stood.
Hitting a pedestrian is one of my biggest fears, so I’m always looking for and aware of people on the side of the street. These two were not at a cross walk or an intersection, and she was busy talking to him and did not look toward me as she stepped into the street - he was looking directly at me as she stepped into the street and grabbed her back. I was watching for them, but still didn’t think she was about to walk into the street since she didn’t look.
This is maybe the second time in normal street driving I’ve hit the brakes so hard I locked all the wheels on dry pavement - which makes a lot of noise and a lot smoke (no ABS) . The guy looked pretty embarrassed actually, didn’t really see the girl’s face.
Anyway kids, look both ways before crossing the street, and always be aware of pedestrians even if they’re not at a crosswalk.

Almost hit a guy who walked in front of the car when I was looking left before turning right. So I’m extra careful to look right again.
Had a bicycle roll in front of me at pretty good speed exactly as the light turned green, exactly as my foot moved from brake to gas. In an automatic rental.

Yup...I’ve almost run into morons a few times...Mahone Bay is a very big tourist town and a lot of tourists just walk into the street when they feel like crossing...
I also almost ran into a Civic when I was going 90kph (it doesn’t look like I was going 90, but I was!)
that pulled out in front of me once. Luckily I saw it in enough time and was still JUST far enough away that no brake locking was required...

I almost hit a couple that started jogging across the street without looking. At my old job in my work Yaris, which locked up despite supposedly having ABS. Dumped my sandwich into the footwell and spilled my coffee. All I got in return was a glance and a half-assed wave when I managed to stop 6 feet short of them. I can’t tell if people are honestly so stupid that they don’t know they’re in danger, or what.

Nice article about a SAAB collector’s quest for a Jubileum (10th anniversary) 96 in today’s paper:

Those last few cars are interesting, and I think Saab did a good job keeping them looking fresh compared to some older cars in the era. Interestingly, Swedish production had already ended before 1980 (I think in 1977 or 1978?) , and the last cars were built in Finland, where they continued to sell mostly on the basis of being the only car built in Finland (and there are plenty of Fins who believe their Finish Saabs were built better than the Swedish ones).
