A new era dawns, although it’s an awful lot like the old era.
2016 4Runner Trail, with a sunroof and, interestingly, a Katzkin leather interior that’s nicer than the Softex available in the Trail Premium. Just brought it home and moved the roof rack over from the old era’s ( quite similar) flagship.
Speaking of which, the old battleship
is now officially for sale.
It’s a 2005 SR5 V8 4wd with 197,000 exceptionally well-maintained miles. Just got a more or less clean bill of health from the dealer service department, although of course there’s stuff it’ll need in the longer term.

Stop reinforcing my stereotype that silver is the only color available on 4Runners.

I love the current gen 4Runners. I also love Katzkin leather; it’s sooooooo soft. Good find. If this was a year ago, I totally would have bought your old rig; but alas, times change. Hope it finds a good new home!

Don’t you have a BFP RAV4, too? How’s that doing, and is it going anywhere soon?

It was actually kind of hard to find a silver one! I only really wanted silver or the darker gray.

They only seem to come in black around my corner of the world.

Me too. Yeah, it was a good find—kind of solved the L imited vs Trail debate because I don’t like Softex much but the black fabric was a no-go—I have white dogs.

Wish I could grab the old one from ya. The new one looks great though, I'm loving those gunmetal wheels!

Me, at the local car dealership: did I go colorblind?

Yes, good—around 70k miles, I think, and pretty solid. And maybe, although the missus loves that thing. N ot because of the 4runner (although she’ll like that too) but because the reason Jr. was driving the newer Volvo most of the time has changed and we can probably shed one more car now, and the Volvo has a lot more convenience and safety features.

We all know they don’t only come in silver.
They also come in grey, gray and white (for the more bold owners).

Which is also not really a color.
For me, it’s likely this: I’ve noticed over the years that if I’m looking for something and I don’t expect to find it , I won’t.
I don’t expect to see any color other than silver, so I don’t.

I love the Trail/Off-Road wheels too. Old one will hit a Craigslist near you in a week or two unless an Opponaut or a friend grabs it first.

Also black, or at least the 4th gen appears to be 75% black around here. The 5th gen seems to mostly come in white.

I thought they came in midnight charcoal grey instead of black.

Only 70,000? It has the Toyota letters next to the RAV4 logo, so it has to be a 2009 or 2010. Low miles!
Before I read the post further, I thought this 4Runner was a RAV4 replacement. I thought the 2005 was a fun, cheaper car in the family; I didn’t know it had a more serious purpose. As I’ve said plenty of times, my 2012 is fantastic. I just hit 88,000 miles today, and while some aspects of the design are bad, it’s a reliable, safe car. I hope the 4Runner does well in the family. However, if a newer, better vehicle can take the RAV4’s place, the RAV4 can go to a new home and last well beyond 100,000 miles.

Well if by some crazy chance it doesn’t sell by the time I get back from Asia color me extremely interested. Zoidberg has convinced me I need to stop buying dangerously cheap European cars....

The 4Runner has a very serious purpose: it keeps me from shitting myself trying to commute in a C63 AMG in wet weather. Also it hauls dogs and skis and whatnot. It’ll get more miles than the C63.

Congrats! I really like mine, it’s silly that Toyota won’t configure the Pro or Off Road (Trail) with the third row. Grrr.

That changes the picture completely. I thought the C63 was your everyday car and the 4Runner was an occasional off-roader (hence it was older and cheaper than the family fleet). If it has a big stake in your life, it’s good to get something newer! I hope you like this 2016. Were you able to score a good deal; even Off Lease Only and other wrecked car dealers don’t have good 4Runner prices.

It definitely started exactly the way you describe , but I kept driving it more and more—eventually I decided that if I really am driving it half the time or more it might as well be fully modern. The end result of this will probably be that when the time comes the C63 will get replaced with something wildly impractical . I got a decent deal, none of them are cheap but this one’s CPO and ended up with a reasonable price.
If anyone wants a steal on a TRD Pro, I know where they can find one across town at a BMW dealer that is currently stuck with two of them and is apparently desperate to dump the older one.

Listed for $10,500, but I’d offer a $1,000 Oppo discount.

After selling the last Volvo, I’ve decided to buy a new Ducati instead of a truck/SUV.
I’ll probably regret this choice when I’m stuck choosing between the Miata and Monster during the r ainy season....
