Kinja'd!!!

Ate some Coney dogs, saw some art. At the direction of some of Oppo’s Detroiters, I hit up two of the city’s oldest Coney dog joints. I had no idea the Coney dog was invented in Detroit by Greek immigrants. The two oldest Coney joints in town were started by members of the Keros family and sit right next to each other. I decided to get a dog from each of them, because I hate myself.

There’s a ton of awesome architecture in this city, and I could spend a whole week wandering around. However, I only had a few hours, so I hit up the Detroit Institute of Art in order to check out the Diego Rivera murals. Coming from the Southwest, it was cool to see one of the seminal pieces by the husband of Mexico’s greatest artist. I know we’re all a bunch of gear heads here, but if you visit Detroit, definitely check out the art institute. It’s one of, if not the most impressive collections I’ve seen in North America. If you’re an educator you can register fir free admission and residents of the surrounding counties get free admissions. Breathtaking stuff. You have a great city, Detroiters.

Good call on the Diego mural and the DIA. I can remember my Dad taking me there when I was little. It’s been years since I went and now I kinda want to go again.

It’s a really cool city. The art deco architecture everywhere is awesome.

Aw, man. That takes me back. I lived in the building across the street from the DIA for four years. I miss it sometimes.

Park Shelton? Those rooftop views are great.

Yup. Buddy of mine had one of the 2-bedroom units on the 10th (or maybe 11th? It’s been a long time) floor, facing downtown. Always loved hanging out there.

Mine was on the 7th floor, looking north up Woodward, right over the dumpsters.

The best way to enjoy a hot dog is on a new England style bun and with plenty of mustard and only mustard. Also, the hot dog should be a Hebrew national hot dog.

As a former Chicago resident, Vienna Beef or nothing.

I’ll allow ketchup, I’m not that big of a Chicago hardo...

But Vienna Beef on a steamed poppy bun. Top it as you like.

I understand the words you are saying, but not in the context of a hot dog.

Blasphemy!

I’ll have to try Vienna beef. Any idea if there’s a distributor who may sell then as far southeast as Atlan ta?

It still irks me that the closest thing to a new england style bun in this part of the country is a "split top" bun. Ugh!

You can literally order Chicago style Hot Dog kits off Vienna’s website.

https://www.viennabeef.com/shop-category/kits-gifts/

There’s a retail locator on that site too. See if there’s one near you.
