Kinja'd!!!

I’ll be in your fine city for a minute today. Looking to sample some your guys’ drip pan shaped pizza. I’m not a touristy person, and don’t need any bells and whistles. I have no problem eating at sketchy joints if the food is good. Any other local flavors I should sample outside of pizza? I’m staying in small town central Michigan and Detroit might as well be Mars up here. Thanks!

If you are going to be in Detroit, you need to hit up Lafeyette Coney.

Watch out sketchy has a new meaning in Detroit. Just stay on the main streets and don’t cut thru the hoods.

I highly recommend the Henry Ford museum too.

My favorites are PieSci and PizzaPlex. Both are kind of hipster but plex is Neapolitan style and real good, pies ci is Detroit style and they have the best  toppings.

If you want a fantastic dining experience goto Takoi. Its new Detroit at it’s best.

You’re the second guy to recommend a Coney Dog place. I grew up summering on the Jersey shore and NYC and was surprised to see Coney Dog places. What’s the connection to Michigan?

Faygo and Vernors. Two ends of the spectrum, historically. I was surprised to see Coney Dog places here. What’s the connection? I grew up summering in NJ and NYC and this surprised me.

10-4 on the hoods. I was raised from a young age on how to operate in big cities. From third world barrios to the South Bronx.

To be honest I’m not sure. The flint area Coneys are different than the Detroit one . Oh and Asian corn beef.

Corned beef egg rolls are my new favorite drunk food.

Enjoy!

Lafeyette has been around forever, never really changed. Occasionally see some slightly famous people in there just because the coneys and chili cheese fries are epic. I recently moved to the west coast and the lack of coney joints is highly upsetting.

I looked it up, and apparently coney island dogs were invented in Detroit by Greek immigrants. They called them coney island dogs because they were introduced to hot dogs on coney island after going through Ellis Island. Pretty cool history.

For a drink, here’s two sides of the spectrum, both next to each other.

Sugar House-fine crafted cocktails. You won’t know what a good chunk of the ingredients mean on the menu (unless you’re an officianado).

LJ’s lounge-divey feel; cheap beer and cocktails; dollar jello shots; we usually put our names in at Sugar House (because theres usually a long wait at night), then “pregame” at LJ’s.

Located on Michigan Ave in Corktown

Martins corned beef on van dyke has them too along with a few others but Asian corned beef is the original.

Go hungry its filling but they keep well if you over order.

Enjoy!

I’ve done exactly this.   Try Castalia and Jumbos if you want to change it up.

Buddy’s is classic Detroit Pizza. Where abouts in Central MI? There’s a really good mexican restaurant  in Sanford, MI called El Viras. But “central” Michigan is a fairly large area so it could be nowhere near you.

Thanks for the recommendation. I hit up Lafayette’s and American Coney Island because I’m a psycho.

Thanks for the recommendations. Hit up the original coney  dog places then Vinsetta Garage. Very cool place with a great beer selection.
