First time in Michigan. The Flint airport has some cool displays. Automotive culture is really infused into everything here. Might have to get a car themed tattoo this vacation . Thinking about the old school V8 logo.

Bit of a bittersweet visit as we’re here to see my wife’s grandmother, whose Alzheimers is progressing pretty rapidly. It’s a rough situation, but I’m glad my kids are getting to see there great grandma one more time and hang out in the house their grandma grew up in. My wife’s grandpa worked for GM in their heyday and was able to secure a very nice plot of land for his family.

I was doing yardwork in 110F temps yesterday, and I’m currently relaxing, having a La Croix in a grassy and shaded 85 degree yard. Feels good, man.

Pretty yard, and a nice garden. Speaking of logos that Buick V6 one may not be as iconic as the Ford V8 but it’s pretty damn awesome.

There used to be a car themed park in flint. Buick land? I forgot what they called it.

If you have time run on down to the Henry Ford it's worth a trip.

So, as far as automotive tattoos go, what are good ones? I’ve considered it before but want it to be tasteful/meaningful.

I’ve thought about VIN’s? But maybe risky due to the fact you would have marked yourself like a holocaust victim.

I don’t know if any tattoo can really be considered “tasteful”. Keep in mind I got my first tattoos in high school and have had tattoos applied on me in my kitchen.

The old school Chevy V8 logo fits my personal aesthetic.

Having met Holocaust survivors with serial number tattoos, a VIN would be eerily reminiscent.

Perhaps a sweet turbo, in honor of that Buick?

Haven’t been to the airport (flew into DTW and drove up), but there’s a lot of good going on in Flint these days .

The midwest is so hard; I grew up in Ohio, and have so much love for the Great Lakes. Going back there over the last few years has mostly been because of grandparents passing, and seeing what it’s become has been more painful with every passing year. But what people in Michigan are doing has been inspiring. There have been so many missteps in the rebuilding, but it does feel like there could be something good to come.

Maybe that’s just the midwesterner in me talking, there’s something about the summer there that makes you feel more alive than anything.

The BBC did had a long form story about the rebuilding of Detroit yesterday. In the story it mentioned people returning items they had looted from the Michigan Central Station when they found out it was being restored. Good stuff.

There’s so much there. Cleveland has done a good job of maintaining, while Detroit has been excavating. There were so many abandoned buildings dowtown when I lived there, so much lost.

It’s a long story and the station’s barely scratches the surface. Super interesting, thanks for the link.

Yeah, it’s pretty nuts. It’s crazy to think about Detroit being the richest city in the world at one point. When you look at all the architecture and art that was there, what happened over the last half century or so really was apocalyptic.
