In shopping the Alltrack and posting about it on Oppo, somewhere I said, “Now would be the perfect time for an oxford green E39 M5 with the extended tan leather to pop up on my radar. Then I sell the Ranger and the M3 and live happily ever with the most fun big car ever.” I said that because I was having a hard time with the dealer I was working with, so I would have loved to do a complete 180 at that point in time...
4 days ago I bought that Alltrack as some of you know. FOUR FUCKIN DAYS...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Think I can return it? I bet this goes for similar money.

You can console yourself with the fact that the VW has an excellent warranty while a 20 year old M5 probably costs as much in annual maintenance as your car payment on the VW.

P erfect example of a good bad idea.
Good idea, because M5 and v8 manual sedan
Bad idea, because German engineering. And I'm not just talking about the drivetrain.

I’m about to be hit my 12th anniversary with my 17 year old E46 M3. Averaged out I’m well under $2000/year on upkeep. That includes mods and upgrades of which there are only a few but they weren’t cheap. I have also always ran really nice tires on that car.
I also had an E90 M3 that cost me almost 5 grand in 18 months.
So it’s a toss up, but I’m super comfortable with almost any early 00's BMW

That is a beautiful car, but think about all the damage kids are going to do to the backseat... of your Alltrack instead of a car whose value is likely going up, not down.
That said, the back seat of my wagon was surprisingly clean after a good svending. I also always had a blanket under the car seats to protect that. Highly recommended.
Man, that M5 is pretty though.

“Only make a terrible financial decision if you can really, really afford to.”
Said
by Tripper’s dad to 22 year old Tripper before pulling the trigger on the E46 M3 and Trading in an STi for -$8,
000.
Tripper: “I’m 22, fuck it”
Said again when I traded my 10 month old Jetta to the tune of -$4000 to be owner #3 on a 53k mile 2008 E90 M3.
Tripper: “I did it before, I can do it again ”
Again when I wanted to buy a brand new S3 outright
Tripper: “I did it before, I can do it again”
Again when I wanted to buy a 45 year old BMW from Europe.
Tripper: “I did it before, I can do it again”
“Hey Dad, I’m thinking of trying to finagle a way to get out of my 4 day old car and into a 17 year old V8 BMW. What do you think?

This is not Murphy’s Law. Murphy’s Law states that anything that can go wrong, will. You’re just a victim of poor timing or perhaps impatience, coupled with buyer’s remorse. The grass is always greener on the other side.

I mean it’s gone bad once. However I attribute my poor luck with the E90 and my poor luck gambling in casinos as payback for all of the shithead things I did when I was a kid. I’m sure I still have a couple of sins to pay for but the the 2.slow Jetta through E90 days were tough ones. I knocked out a lot of bad moral debt there.
I’m serious about the casino. I don’t gamble (or I do and burn $200 in 10 minutes and stop) but don’t even stand near me you will not win.

Definite impatience, but that has served me well more often than not albeit a bad personality trait.
Maybe that car will go 40 or more and then I wont have to care.

I mean, if you can get it for less than $20k (hard limit, sir - no exceptions!), it will depreciate far less than the VW will . Losing $1000 in the short term on selling back the VW maybe look like the smart decision in 5 years...
I’m not helping. Don’t listen to me.

Highly doubt 20k final price There are a lot of Trip s and Dave s out there drooling over this car/color combo (more Daves than Trips I would guess)
20 is the reasonable number but I’m gonna bet more like 30 here. I could be an idiot up to 28. I’d love to see it go well into the 30's so it’s easier to forget haha.

Yea me too. I’ve always wanted a re-do with an E90 M3 and a WRX STi. The M3 for obvious reasons, and the STi because I was a stupid kid when I had mine for 6 months. I’d love to enjoy such a neat car with a head on my shoulders.

While true there are a couple things the e39 has that e46s doesn t.
Li ke cup holders that disintegrate just by looking at them. Seriously, they weren’t really planned on the e39 so the plastic arms that pop out, break on anything bigger than a pop can. And that can still break them.
Sun shades that come unwound, and a rear sunshade with plastic clips holding up the power rear sunshade. (And are a bitch to replace....)
Sun roof guides and arms made of your grandma’s hip bone
They do share the fact of window regulators packing it in whenever they want. And Aux water pumps that decide daily what it wants to do.

“Like cup holders that disintegrate just by looking at them. Seriously, they weren’t really planned on the e39 so the plastic arms that pop out, break on anything bigger than a pop can. And that can still break them.”
This is also an E46 thing. Which is why I have ditched mine for new euro trays. I’ve also replaced two bubbling door handles, and and any interior trim piece that was scratched (so all of them) haha.
The sunshade if equipped and sunroof are possible annoyances. However my E46 is a rag top. I’ve replaced the motor, and taken apart most of the soft top in diagnosing that. Those aren’t deal breakers either.
To further back your statements. I’m currently down a drivers side window regulator, and I have previously replaced both water pumps!

Haha! What’s funny is, the STi looks grown up compared to the new Type R.
I had a bad test drive experience in a new ‘12 WRX before I bought my M3. Couldn’t abide a transmission and interior worse than my ‘05 Mazda 3s hatch.

lol yes, interior is bad . I’ve not been in a WRX with a stock clutch/shifter in a long time. A bunch of my buddies have them but they’re all modded up. One guy has equal length headers on his STi (removes the subie rumble) it sounds amazing!

Yes, the Alltrack is green/black, and it replaced our aging 05 passat wagon. It’s our nice/safe/30+MPG/sensible family hauler.
I’ve been driving the same mkIV Golf TDI for 14 years, and it was also time for a change. The M5 was a very lucky encounter, the seller was literally across the street from my office. The golf will be sold ASAP as we are currently a 5-car household (Alltrack, M5, Golf, Eurovan Camper and project E30, all manuals!)
Congrats on the Alltrack, I saw your post on the CDV delete, which I’m also comtemplating, let us know how it works out!

And the similarities continue. I am also a 5 car household at the moment as I had planned to trade in my little Ranger but couldn’t make a good enough deal. I think my father in law is going to take it off my hands but right now (19' Alltrack, 01' Ranger, 02' M3, 75' 1502, 17' Forester) also all manuals! I’ve had the M3 almost 12 years.
Gotta love those cars that just “fall into your lap”.
Thanks! I’m going to buy an extra valve first in case I hate it haha.

It such a bitch, it only acts up on hot days. I open the door and the window drops, goes back up several times while I hope that it stops in the down position so that I can quickly close the door. Otherwise I have to get back in the car, but it down, get out of the car, close the door then lock the car with the key and hold it so the windows go up...

Nice to have an official word. I knew it was probably true but still more or less a “rumor” when I was shopping them.
Regarding the M5, I did the following. Mentioned it to my father, (which is a great person to talk to if you want to buy something cool as he’ll coach you over the line, good idea or bad). In mentioning it to him I told him what I thought I would have to do to get it. Then I told him all of the reasons I should not do that. He agreed with all of those and then we both decided that it should be a game time decision.
I’m still confident that it will be price out of my budget with less than 30 minutes to go.
