No diesel Transit Connect after all

What a shame. Because it probably would’ve been the most fuel-efficient minivan available.

And also, no more SWB passenger van. Now, it’s only SWB cargo, LWB cargo, and LWB passenger van.

Sorry if the FP reported on it already

I didn’t know it was going to be an option  for the US, that sucks.

I remember when Car and Driver was worth reading. that was like back in the ‘90s, when they were staffed by real car guys and engineers like Bedard, Csere, Yates, Ceppos, and so on. now they’re just a collection of the same handful of junket-abusing schmucks who go from publication to publication, vomiting out re-worded press kits just so they can go get fed, housed, and provided with a steady stream of press cars to use as their personal vehicles. C&D jumped the shark when they hired that pompous know-nothing Dan Pund.

Th e full  fat Transit is getting AWD tho, which is kinda cool I guess.

Is Ford slowly de-listing every vehicle from the U.S. one by one, except SUVs?

We get the Connect in one petrol,

1.0 100ps manual

five diesel

1.5 75/100/120ps manual,

1.5 100/120ps auto matic.

Yup, that is exactly what they are doing.

The Focus was already dropped. The Fusion and Fiesta will be dropped soon.

Eventually, they will only sell the Mustang and F150.

Ye’, first they drop any replacement for the Fusion/Mondeo,

then discontinue the Fiesta and Focus, except the Focus Active for North America,

then says it’s not going to give North America the Focus Active either.

So North America will get the SUVs (though not the small crossovers, KA+ Active, Fiesta Active and Focus Active) , the Mustang and two of the four vans (two of five vans if you include the Fiesta van).

Here, the powertrains are:

2.0 GDI NA gas, 162 hp @ 6500 /144 lb-ft @ 4500 , 8-speed automatic (24 MPG city, 29 MPG highway)

2.5 port injection NA gas, 169 hp @ 6000/171 lb-ft @ 4500, 6-speed automatic (20 MPG city, 26 MPG highway)

The diesel was estimated at 30 MPG highway, with significantly more expensive emissions control equipment, and more maintenance required, at which point... why? Who would buy this over the 2.0 gas engine (which, yes, has a lot less torque, but that’s what the 8-speed auto is meant to solve)?

At 30 MPG estimated highway, it wasn’t even going to beat the (much, much, much larger) Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.

If you accounted for the 13% greater energy in a gallon of diesel, it was less efficient than the gas engines in the Transit Connect, or any of the larger gas minivans for that matter. (We don’t know what it was going to do in the city, but the city cycle isn’t particularly kind to diesels.)

we don’t have emissions standards which hilariously stack the deck in diesel’s favor.  I’m guessing they canceled it because they discovered no one in the US actually wanted the goddamn thing.

we also don’t do idiotic stuff like tax vehicles based on engine displacement; a characteristic which doesn’t map to fuel consumption. I look at the powertrain line-up for e.g. the Fiesta in the UK, and all I see is stupid. Just like your example; why the hell does the Transit Connect need six engine options between 75 and 120 PS?

On what planet does that make a lick of sense?

1.5 Econe tec 100ps

72.4mpg UK (60mpg US) for the 62mph speed limited vehicle ,

67.3mpg UK (56mpg US) for the non speed limited vehicle.

That’s gotta be NEDC, right?

And, of course, European emissions, which even Euro 6d with WLTP is AFAIK a lot more lax on NOx than US EPA emissions.

Cool, nor is ours since 2001.

https://www.gov.uk/calculate-vehicle-tax-rates

Car vehicle tax rates are based on either engine size or fuel type and CO2 emissions, depending on when the vehicle was registered. Other types of vehicle have their own rates.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

For cars registered before 1 March 2001 the rate of vehicle tax depends on its engine size .

The rate for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 depends on CO2emissions and fuel type . They’ll be taxed using the old system if this information is not available.

.

.

why the hell does the Transit Connect need six engine options between 75 and 120 PS

That usually comes down to insurance (ie a younger driver with a larger ps would cost more on insurance than a less powerful engine), etc...

Also cost:

Ford Transit Connect L1, Trend, Ecoblue EU6, RRP:

1.5 75ps = £ 21,238.64

1.5 100ps = £ 21,448.64

1.5 120ps = £ 21,928.64

It’s not the only one to do so, VW, Skoda, etc... all do it for cars and vans .

The 2.5L was a dog in them, 2 extra gears and a motor with far less torque is only going to make it worse. It’s like they want the Transit Connect to fail miserably.

And that is terrible, because other than the lack of power ( which I think the diesel would alleviate some ) it was a damn good minivan.

Problem lies in the testing there.

I can almost guarantee the Diesel TC would have easily beat it’s MPG estimates, as most diesels do, whereas most gas minivans have a hard struggle to even meet their MPG estimates.

Transit’s also getting a diesel option. You have to get the ecoboost engine though; tire spinning van!

Shame, but kinda saw it coming. The announcement came with minimal reception. I also think this is happening because of the collaboration with VW recently. I know they wanted to work together to make commercial vehicles like mini trucks and vans. They probably dumped the di e sel for a future electric option

Here’s my suspicion: they used an emissions control strategy that just WHARRGARBLed the fuel, and then planned to find a way to cheat the testing.

They probably couldn’t cheat the American testing.

I think “they realized the average American has an aversion to diesel vehicles so they wouldn’t actually sell many” is a more realistic scenario.
