Decided to go in last night and replace the rear main seal on the Miata swap motor. Didn’t know what state the clutch was in, so figured I’d scope that and see if it needs replacement.

Kinja'd!!!

Looks like the pressure plate and disk were replaced quite recently. The friend I bought the motor off of said he put about 5k miles on the car before it got totaled, so based on this wear, it must have been replaced right before he bought it.

The pressure plate isn’t even broken in yet, it still has machine marks

Noticed a little roughness in the pilot bearing, so I’ll replace that, but everything else looks fine to reinstall as is. Was originally planning to put in my 1.6 setup (it’s lighter and fits), but this is in such good shape I’ll probably leave it as it was.

I wonder what the clutch disk in my Subaru looks like haha. 167,000 miles on the original clutch. Still going strong but with the state of my flywheel (grinds on start sometimes) it will lead to a clutch job eventually. I am kinda curious how far I can actually make it on the original clutch though, I don’t imagine too many STi clutches are unabused enough to make it this long.

For comparison, this was the clutch I replaced when I pulled the car out of the woods. This was also the reason it was abandoned and left to rot. No idea of miles on it though.

When I had the transmission out of my OBXT the clutch still had plenty of life in it so it was put back in, and I’ve put another 20k miles on it since then at 250whp. There is 160k miles on the car overall, but my Subaru guy said it looked like an aftermarket heavy duty clutch so I guess it must have been replaced at some point. I do have the classic Subaru throwout bearing noise and have had it for some time, and the starter spins without engaging the flywheel sometimes in the winter (I’ve lived with it for 3 years now). It’s fun hearing things and ignoring them until one day they suddenly become real problems...

I made it to almost 200k with the original clutch on my NA Saabaru before it got taken out by a deer. The MK4 GTI I had before that made it to 220k miles   with no record of a clutch replacement (I bought it at 100k miles ), so I’m hoping I’m just not that hard on clutches. Of course those don’t have the power of an STI!

I suppose it all depends on how it’s driven. Previous owner was late 30s and the original owner of the car until I bought it at 136k. Considering the spoiler delete, regular maintenance, and all stock parts, seems like it wasn’t doing clutch dump launches or anything lol.

And yeah I guess I’ll keep living with the flywheel skipping until I’m stuck someplace. Been like that since I got the car and hasn’t really changed in frequency of occurrence. I assume one day the starter just won’t engage and I’ll have to get towed. I’m just doubtful I can do a clutch job myself so I always put off things that are ignorable and require a mechanic. Just like my AC that has been broken since September. I’m finally getting that fixed today though lol. Haven’t actually needed it yet which is surprising but it’s not gotten hot yet in Socal this year. The only times I've been wanting it was in the desert, but I was driving the Miata at the time anyways, so it would be not very useful lol.

I’ve got 164k on my 328i clutch. It’s still smooth and easy to use, no slippage. I also wonder how long that can last.

Not sure how bad your throw out bearing noise is but I can confirm that this works.

19 years and 187k miles later, I present to you my E36’s clutch. I bought it last year and have only put on 3k miles because the previous owner neglected all of the maintenance. Thankfully I got it off of the QuickJack (it’s  resting spot for the past 12 months) last week and now it’ s ready for the rest of summer

That... has seen better days

Did it bond to the friction surfaces while it was sitting?

How do you check the throw out bearing? Are you looking for play when you fiddle with it, or is it more of a listening thing?

Really, on any of the bearings if there is any play at all or any noise, replace. After confirming no play, I'll load it on a few axis and turn it really slowly and feel for any rough spots.

No, I changed this clutch out last November. As soon as I took this picture, the rest of the friction material quite literally fell off. The car sat all winter and spring while I refreshed everything else in the car. Engine needed new vacuum lines & cooling system, headliner and interior panels were falling off, every bushing in the rear was shot, the shift pins in the transmission were stuck, shocks & springs were mismatched and questionable  at best

It’s not that bad currently, although it seems louder after I haven’t driven the car for a day or two. I actually just found that forum post yesterday, cool to have it confirmed. If it gets worse I’ll probably try that out. Thanks!
