"Mercedes Streeter" (smart)

This Expedition EL is only a 2011 and it gets washed weekly. Despite this, the tailgate paint is peeling (not even rusting, just peeling) badly and it’s rusting under all the plastic cladding. Sad thing is that Expeditions that look even worse than this are so common where I live, so it’s not just a rare thing.
Despite that, I really would love to offroad this thing. It’s a 2WD whale but I bet it would look dapper with chunky ATs, a winch bumper, and cargo on the roof.
Review soon! Ugh, I wish my Ranger had this bolt pattern, I’d steal these wheels from my parents in a heartbeat!
I also already have a ton of upgrades lined up for the Ranger. What’s wrong with me? Why am I getting this truck fever?!?!?

I see a lot of Ed ges and Explorers of that vintage with peeling paint on the leading edge of the hood. Ford seems to have had a rough patch with their paint quality.

Fixed that for you.
Glacier White is always worse. The paint is peeling on the edge of my drivers’ side fender right where it meets the hood. It s hould be coming off in sheets soon. That’ll be a good excuse for me to get it painted blue.

smart cars. Motorcycles galore. Truck mania. Gambler 500s.
I think your next step would be to tackle The Rubicon. Baja 1000? Dakar?

Ford is bad at paint in general. The paint bubbled and peeled off the trunk lid and hood on my 2013 Mustang, and the rest of it could magically get rock chips down to bare steel while sitting in the garage.

That’s not a paint problem, that’s an aluminum problem.

Yea what im thinking was bad prep of the aluminum as my 2000 expedition is clean with only minor and i do mean minor fading to the roof from rack usage the rest is still show room clean

I consider proper surface prep to be as much a part of a paint job as the paint itself.
Aluminum has been used as a body material for decades, Ford is the only one who seems to have problems painting it.

That would be Ford’s aluminum paint adhesion issues striking again. The E-Series and Mustang have it too, along with the Explorer, Expedition, and Edge. Have heard of some problems with F-150s as well.

I work for a Ford dealership. I have had a few customers trade in near mint expeditions 2010-2011. Yes, great paint and condition as well. They Didn't last long on our preowned lot before someone took these babies home. Oh and they go to high mileage as well. 200k miles and beyond vehicles. Highly recommend for large families. Don’t forget to check out the completely redesigned 2018 to current Expeditions as well. Ford done an amazing job!

Oh no doubt they last a very long time! This Expedition EL has 191k and my Ranger has 220k. Buuut my Ranger’s paint is excellent compared to the Expedition.
Still, it’s a very common sight for me to see Explorers, Expeditions, and F-150s circa 2011 and older in my area with awful paint peeling. Must be something about that fresh Illinois and Wisconsin air and the aggro salt we use in the winter. xD
Thankfully it seems Ford fixed it with the newer designs because I haven’t seen newer Explorers with the peeling.

After driving a 2016-17 Taurus SEL, I’d say this is a better fix for modern Ford:

I don't know, the trucks usually seem pretty decent. I haven't had much experience with the cars, though.
