I’m kind of failing at letting this Neon be a beater.
Next problem: the smell. Not a smoker’s car, but it stinks like a combo of BO (20 years of no air conditioning...) and decomposing plastic. Any suggestions?

Cheap option: ozium bomb
less cheap: ozone treatment

Ozone treatment is a little more spendy than I’d like on this car. Any personal experience with the o zium bomb? I’ve never heard of that, so I’ll have to do some research.

It’s mostly a joke, it’s when you use some tape to keep a can of ozium spraying , throw it inside a car and shut the door. Ozium does actually work pretty well though, so I think it’s worth a shot. If I were you I’d give the car a deep clean with something like this , and then spray it down with ozium once or twice a day for a few days (leave windows up) and see where that gets you.

Ozone is the way to go.

When I got sick of polishing my OEM lights, I replaced them with a set of black eyeliner-ed ones from ebay

You sound like me - my DD is a 2009 Hyundai Accent which I have come to love a lot, so I do more to it than I should. :P
I bought a new Driver’s side headlight for it the other year as the old one was cracked (but not leaking water in). Still need to find a salvage passenger light in better shape than my current one, or get a new one for that side....it’’s pretty UV-scarred, but mostly only faded along the top - you can see it in this pic....driver’s side nice and clear, top of passenger side very faded. :(

eBay. Replacement lights are cheap. Not OEM quality, but generally easy to install and look good as new.

Those faded lights are one of my favorite things in life to hate. I’ve never tried the polishing treatment. I always just but cheap replacements on eBay. Look like new and make a yuuuge improvement to the appearance of the car. Frequently, the replacements even include bulbs.
And safety. Having serviceable headlamps is hardly “not a beater.”

Oh, and the smell? I'd probably drive around with the windows open a lot.

Yup,
mine was a bit of a faff because the first one I ordered had the wrong plug
, but otherwise it was actually pretty close to OEM quality and I got it from Ebay. :)

I cannot stand fogged headlights.
The polishing kit I bought was $40 and mostly worked, but the replacement headlights I bought we’re $80 for the pair. I don’t know why I bothered with the p olish at all.

Just looked it up and there’s a shop nearby that does an overnight ozone treatment for $40. That's probably worth it.

I have not bothered with the polishing kits at all. The replacement lights may not hold up as well as OEM though. I have a 2011 Mazda 3 and the lights are just beginning to fade.

“Eagle-eyes?" Probably the same ones I bought. Fitment and build quality seem good.
