After posting about
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
a couple weeks ago, I was informed by a few other Opponaughts that my 128i was suffering from a potentially fatal issue that affects all N52-engined BMWs. So I set about remedying that.

A couple hundred dollars, one Friday, and an emergency dealer parts department run later, I had replaced not only the leaky gasket, but the coolant, oil, drive belt (with accompanying tensioner and idler pulley), and radiator drain plug (the emergency parts run). It was a lot of work on a very hot day, but it’s also the first serious wrenching I’ve done in a couple years and I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to working on it again.
It’s been a wee
k now and the leak seems to be gone and there’s no more bearing whine at idle. I’m happy to report mission accomplished. Thanks to His Stigness, Arch Duke Maxyenko, and Shift24 for your help in preparing for this job. It’s great to have a community like this that I can depend on when I need help with things like this.
Pics of the freshly washed 1-series for your time.

My next job is my windshield washer pump. Not at all excited about it, but the part’s on order.

That’s nice work that will certainly pay off in years of reliability. Your car looks great too!

Sweet, sweet N52 goodness. Probably one of the best BMW engines. Shame the Germans can’t make a gasket to save themselves

I’m in for basically the same work in the next little while, when I eventually get around to actually ordering the parts. I’m gonna do the oil filter housing and belts/pulleys just like you, though the belt is more preventative for me as it’s unaffected so far, AFAIK. I’m also going to do spark plugs, air filters and order M3 front control arms. I might also do the valve cover gasket, I just need to dig in and see if it’s seeping too. If I get all that done I’ll finally have it tuned up to my liking.
I’ve been driving the 128 sparingly because I want to tackle this work but I don’t want to do an oil change (due soon) before I do. :)
