After 4 years of school I’m finally a real furniture designer! Any Atlantan Oppos out there that have an idea of where to find good apartments?

Kinja'd!!!

This means, among many other things that I will be able to get the Dodge out of storage, and while I’m at the storage unit I can get my canoe out! Of course not immediately, but still, having a job and my own place means I’ll be able to pursue such interests like never before.

I’m excited. It’s been a long summer of not doing anything at my paren’t house, more than anything I’m looking forward to having work to do, especially in something I enjoy.

No but you’ll have to let me know how you like it after you’ve been there awhile. I’m looking at where I’m gonna be moving to in the next year and Atlanta is on the list.

Where in Atlanta you are working dictates where you live. I work in tech so the 400 corridor for me. If your job is downtown Brookhaven and to the  south is where you want to look. Stay away from the west side. Also your budget matters a lot.

Yes, this is the key question. Atlanta is big enough and parts of it are ugly enough that you may not want to live too close to your work. But your commute may be ugly enough that you don’t want to live to o far from your work .

Congrats! Being out of school a few years now, I enjoy the work life much better. It initially felt weird being the youngest in the office, but it’s a great situation for learning and experimenting. If you can figure out not only how things are done , but why, you will be set apart from most others.

Google maps pins it at right between Underwood Hills and Blandtown. Just north of the big train yard, and in close proximity.

This is vital. Atlanta offers everything from into skinny jeans hipster gentrified industrial spaces , to rap mogul bankruptcy estates , McMansions to rural southern redneck recluse depending on where one wants to live.

West side really that bad? That's mainly where I've been looking, a lot of places there are within 5 miles of where I'd be working, near the big NS train yard.

Theres plenty of neighborhoods on the West Side that will be just fine. This has changed in the last few years.

My sister got a super nice apartment in Bartow County for a decent rental price. If you’re looking for apartments, I’d suggest Cherokee County. A lot of the apartment areas in Cobb aren’t the best.

Every house popping up in Cobb County seems to be $400,000+, which is expensive for Georgia.

My buddy who works for Grady as a meat wagon supervisor, says differently get west of Northside on the I20 corridor and it is still a bad part of town. Now not as bad as when I ran parking lots there for 1996 Olympics, that was rough. Although Cabbage town is really nice

“Bad part of town” = black for many Atlantans. I’m white, and a native, so not immune to this. I’m not suggesting moving in to Vine City, but that a number of NW quadrant neighborhoods are perfectly safe places t o live now. I know this b cause the agent that sold me my first house in Inman Park now exclusively works in Atlanta NW.

Hahahaha. If you are in the right parts of E Cobb, your low by $200k. Ask me how I know...

I’m talking about west Cobb. East Cobb has always been expensive!

So I’ve made quite a few stops near there in an industrial area . Liberty tire is where I dump my used tires at (and some fr ie nds tires ). It’ s right there on Huber south of Chat ta hoochee Ave . Also there is a TopGolf there that I’ve been to. So that all is in an industrial section. Some of that immediate area looks a bit sketchy to me.

Your work is just north of Georgia Tech which is an inter es ting mix of nice areas and perhaps dangerous. And a bit south of Buckhead and West Paces F erry where the people with way too much money live. I’d g et a month to month rental in Cobb county, not too far west from 285, and then ask around for several months where coworkers and other people you meet live and get their input. The eas tern part of Cobb County should give you an under 30 minute commute. It would be a 15 minute drive if there wasn’t any traffic. But there will pretty much always be traffic around your work.

Ideally? I'm not a huge fan of long commutes and like the idea of biking to work when it's not too hot out. Cobb county is seeming to be more affordable though and only about a 20 minute commute.

Like Smyrna area, or Vinnings. I stayed at a hotel in Vinnings when I had my interview. Quite nice indeed. Would be happy there. Lotsa windy roads through neighborhoods to get to work from there, didn’t seem bad when I drove from there to work. Going down to Atlanta tomorrow from Raleigh to check out some places.
