So instead of lighting them off yourself, you should go to an official celebration, where fireworks are launched safely and professionally. Just don’t go to Kyle, TX, a few miles south of Austin.

Every year it sounds like a battle zone in my neighborhood. Until I moved out of California I had no idea that just anyone could buy such fireworks and launch then themselves, always assuming that there were laws and regulations against such behavior. They don’t go very high, like professional shows, but tend to explode just a little above roof height, or so it seems; I can hear and feel them, but I can't see them.  And they go on for hours - before sunset until after 1 am, whivh, technically, is the 5th. But they’ve been firing them off for days before, so anything goes...

My neighborhood sounds like Baghdad 2003. At least it’s better than New Years Eve, when they don’t start until about 11 pm and then go till 2 am.

We started around 2pm and went until about 2 am yesterday. Even sparklers are illegal here but the cops don’t care.

My name is Kyle and I kind of want to visit when fireworks aren’t going off.

They have an annual event (at least I think it’s annual) where they try to gather up as many people as possible named “Kyle.” You should totally go.

Event organizers will once again attempt to reach a Guinness World Book record for the most people named Kyle in one place at the same time.

“If you or someone you know is named Kyle, invite them to be part of making history,” Watson said. “All patrons named Kyle get into the festival for free if they pre-register.”

Be sure to check back and see if they’re doing it again this year.

Hey, I was born in Michigan (Ann Arbor). That was more than 50 years ago tho.

Never assume the California way of doing things is the normal way to do things.

Well, when it’s the only thing you’ve known for 45 years you just think of it as normal, even if it isn’t. My mother, who has lived in California all of her 74 years, was frequently amazed and a little baffled by some of the way things are done here in the midwest when she came out to visit in February . I kept having to remind her that she wasn’t in California. Some of it was so cute, like when she encountered her first snowfall (that wasn’t at a ski resort...)

Yeah, it's cute until you have to dig your car out of it so you can go to work.

Mom was a little worried because she had to do all the driving and probably had never driven in snow, but here in STL it doesn’t get that bad and tends to disappear in a day or two.

I was worried about it when I first moved here. The first couple of winters were brutal, relatively speaking, with everyone telling me that this was abnormal. But I quickly adapted and have had any issues. Ice scares the crap out of me but snow isn't an issue. As with so many things in life, the key to dealing with it is just not to be an idiot...

The last few winters have been really mild. Were you here when we got the big ice storm 10 or so years ago? Something like 200,000 people lost power in St. Louis County. Ameren had to bring in crews from all over the country.

I’ve only lived here since late 2012. Those first two winters were pretty intense, but it’s been smooth sailing ever since. I had some friends that were cooped up in their houses, afraid to go anywhere when it was snowing. Then there’s this crazy Californian, not bothered by it at all, willing to drive halfway across the county for a bite to eat knowing that the roads will be empty because of everyone freaking out about an inch or two of snow.
