It felt like I was on a boat. Girlfriend and I were just sitting at home about to watch the new season of Stranger Things and then the whole world felt like it started moving. I was legitimately wondering if it kept going, would I get motion sickness and the engineer in me really wondered if the building was built to code. I’m still relatively new to California so earthquakes are still a pretty foreign thing to me. About a month ago was the first one that I actually observed. That one was at work and it sounded and felt like the building was hit by an airplane (not entirely unlikely considering where I work). This one was entirely different. Not just a quick shock where some things vibrate and you shake a bit, but instead literally like a boat sitting in the ocean bobbing about in a nice rolling motion. It was unnerving but immediately obvious what was happening. Nothing fell off the bookshelf and power didn’t go out so all is well. Thankfully, it was about 2 hours north of here (equidistant to Vegas) so I could only imagine how much worse it could have been.

Still waiting to hear about damage out in the desert as this one was equivalent to the Northridge quake in ‘94 that everyone here is intimately familiar with. Just luck that it was not in an urban area this time. I’ve got plenty of coworkers out in the R idgecrest area where it took place so I hope they’re alright.

In other news, I actually stopped to take pictures of my Subaru for once. Took a nice canyon run on the way home the other day and thought I’d share some photos. Unrelated on a happier note than this wild “my house is a rollercoaster” day.

6.4 Earthquake, a.k.a. “Watch me rev my straight-piped 392 HEMI”

Didn’t feel anything down in SD county, but maybe my seismic senses are faulty. Only moved out to CA a few years ago so I don’t remember any big ones either.

When I was in Narita I experienced several small earthquakes, but because I had literally just spent over half a day on an plane, I thought I was just motion sick still.

I was closer to the earthquake than you (I think) and I still slept right through it.

There was no missing this one. While you could probably sleep through it because it was gentle, it was still pretty intense

Nah we are about the same distance from there. You are much more West than North. The epicenter was  Northeast of here. If you were awake it would have certainly been noticeable. It was quite like being out to sea rather than just simply shaking.

I'd be so afraid of earthquakes in Japan moreso due to the tsunami risk. At least here I have 2000 feet of mountain in the way and I'm at around 800 feet in the Valley. So any tsunami would be absolutely gigantic to get to me.

I dunno, my mom didn’t notice anything and she was awake.

We're just properly conditioned. So we just spill our drink when "the big one" comes.

It was definitely worse here. I'm also on the 5th floor which is bound to make it more noticeable. It was well over a minute long too which was the really obvious part. But it was like everything was moving on a wave, I legitimately felt a bit motion sick before sitting down to wait it out. It was way stranger than any other tremors I've been through so far.

Well being in a building will definitely make it worse. It’s like being a large water bed. Buildings are designed to move in an earthquake. I don’t know what field trip I was on, but we went somewhere in LA and we learned all about earthquakes and how buildings are being made to withstand them. Maybe we did that field trip as it was only a few years after the Northridge earthquake. But I still remember stuff from it.

The place where I was working (Ridgecrest) awhile ago was pretty much right next door to it.
