That’s a ball joint from the Safari. Pressing it out of the control arm was much easier when the locking pin was shorter. The portable band saw chewed right through it.

Nice!
One of those band saws popped up recently on FB for $50. I should have grabbed it, even though I would probably use it once every 8-1/2 years or so.

Once you have it, i’m sure you’ll find plenty of chances to use it. Like the old “everything looks like a nail to a man with a hammer”

I have a Milwaukee portaband I picked up on Ebay for $100 set up on a Swag table and it is amazing. I can cut consistent angles with the miter gauge and it is powerful enough to cut 3/8 steel without any trouble. I highly recommend the table as it turns the saw into something I use every time I am in my garage.

This one is on loan from a good friend who has three of them and would never consider selling one, though also will probably never ask for this one back. And as Echo51 says below...

Thank you for that. I've been wondering how I might make a chop saw of it.

Probably. Not buying it was definitely a mistake.

Other companies make a horizontal tables, which would turn it into a chopsaw. There are also tons of DIY table designs. The nice thing about the Swag stuff is that it’s simple and it works right out of the box. I spent more on the table than I did the saw. I ended up mounting mine to a cheap stand I got in Amazon. The foot pedal is a pretty sweet set up too.

It’s one of my favorite tools. I don’t use it frequently, but then again, having the saw makes things possible where before, I wouldn’t have bothered because I didn’t want to wrestle with a hack saw.

Exactly why I like it. I do a bit of welding and it was difficult to have to cut everything with a grinder and a cutoff wheel. This makes mitered corners and straight cuts a breeze.

Good idea about cutting off the ball joint.
I’ve got three portables too (keep finding used ones), like your friend. I’ve been meaning to get Sovande’s table for one or two of them.

That’s nice. I’d make mine into a chop saw and look for a used upright band saw for scrolling and so on with wood.

Thanks. This has been a lot of work, but in going back together, I can feel very satisfied. We’ll see how it drives afterward. I have the alignment appointment set for Saturday morning early.

Such a tool would be hugely helpful to me. I've been back sawing my way through a bunch of 1" square tubing - I'm slowly building a welding cart for my recently acquired welder. It's slow going, and I have trouble getting square cuts.

That’s a big reason why I do this stuff. So that I can tell
everyone unfortunate to be near me
that “I’ve mended a thing!”.

That is awesome! I imagine it would work with the cordless Milwaukee band saw too.

Yeah, makes pressing them out much easier. A die grinder or metabo work well too. But more sparkly.

Pretty much. And each bump I go over, I know the suspension I did myself.

Another interesting option is an Evolution branded cold cut saw. I've seen them go on sale for $230 CAD a few times a year.

It will but you can’t use a foot pedal with the cordless saw. On mine the trigger is velcroed on and the cord runs to the foot pedal. Then the foot pedal is plugged in. It’s much more handy than I would have initially guessed. That’s why I ended up with a used corded model. I just used it today to cut the tubing to make this under counter shelf.
