So my new to me 2007 Sterling LC carrier is having a weird ac issue. I’m just trying to diagnose it prior to winging parts willy nilly.
It’s got the MBE4000 motor my last six of VIN are X62104 if you have some kinda special access.
At idle my ac is blowing hot. At highway speeds, or moving at anything really 30 and up. The ac blows cold. I’m not talking stupid cold but enough to cool you down and keep ya comfy.
Again, I’m an idiot with ac stuff. So I figured I’d ask and maybe someone can answer.
It doesnt blow at what I’d consider fine blower speed. I do drive a crown vic and it has basically the same HVAC controls, maybe shares alot more.
My Vic on high will freeze you out. This truck on high might as well be setting 2 or 3 in my car. I’ve put new filters in. The one under the hood and under the dash. Since the under hood one was nasty. I also held the blower motor and blew air into the area to help blow out any junk, which none really came out.
I haven’t checked pressures, added any freon, or anything beyond the filters. I also have a consistent drip of water on the passenger side floor when the ac is running.
With it being the 4th of july this weekend, my preferred diesel mechanic is off until monday.
Any suggestions? Things I could try before just sending it to the shop. I’m content with it when it is actually blowing, just trying to maybe increase blower speed if at all possible and figure out the idles ac issue.
My radiator fan does work, and does do its job.
Picture of it for your time.

Sounds like it is low on refrigerant (freon) . Get it checked first.

Leak somewhere or compressor is going out. As the RPMs increase, the compressing power of the compressor (thats why its called that :P) sends remaining refrigerant faster through the system giving what it can to cool the cab. Or the insides of the compressor is shot and seals are gone or there is metal bits in the A/C lines.
Low refrigerant can cause the evap coil to freeze itself and cause more water to drip. Need to find the drip hole from the engine side and make sure its free of dirt n scum. Do you notice a drop in air movement from vents as it gets warmer? Could be icing up preventing air flow.

Check the condenser fan it maybe dead also is is boiling Freon at idle so that is probably low which will burn up the compressor

I dont have a condenser fan. Just one big pull type off a belt to the crankshaft. To pull air thru the condenser, intercooler and radiator. They're in that order also. From the front to back.

No about the same blower speed regardless. When I’m idling or barely moving I just turn it off.
I'll get one of those ac pro cans with a gauge, andsee pressure. Then maybe add dye to detect a leak or fill the system if I dont notice a leak.

The drop of water onto the floor of the passenger side is likely due to a plugged drain line. There should be a small rubber hose that drains the AC plenum, and when those get plugged the plenum will fill with water and dri p onto your feet. Bugs like to build nests in the ends of the drain lines.
As for the other problems, those are beyond my meager ability to diagnose.

Gah, I hate those A/C pro crap. The sealant messes everything up, just as bad as tire Slime.
I use refrigerant dye . Pep Boys sells it in a little can, but sometimes you can find it with the R134a without sealant.
Check first to make sure the truck takes R134a. If it’s 96 or newer it should, but I dont know when commercial vehicles started using R134a

I was just noticing the same in my (1985) Jaguar. It keeps pretty cool at 80mph but it’s a bit weak on hot days at lower speed. Guess I should have it looked at. Hopefully I can find a shop that does R12. Also I noticed today it dumped a ton of water in the passenger footwell, drains must be clogged.
Considering it probably hasn’t been serviced since the Clinton administration and still works this well it can’t be leaking too badly, right??
AC seems a little week in the MINI also. Should I try to top it off myself or take it to a shop? Surely any good shop can fix it, I’d rather not pay dealer prices.
