I had to buy a new window AC unit for my house today, as the one I had decided to quit working a few days ago. 90 degrees for the next several days is good motivation to get this deal done. Bought a GE unit from Lowes,
which had generally positive reviews and a good price for a 18,000 BTU unit running on a 210 outlet I had run special for the prior AC. I get it home and my son and I start reading the directions for getting it set up. First thing you have to do is disassemble the whole front end, pull the guts of the unit out, and screw a few pieces in that hold the expanding wings on. This, on a $600 unit, that if you drop or otherwise fuck up, it’s toast. Why the hell GE can’t figure out to assemble this thing correctly from the factory is beyond me. I even had to redrill
two holes as they were way off center. I expect to have to cobble a few bits here and there to get it to fit an older window, but this was nuts. Never again, GE, never again.

because then the box would be 20% larger and the unit better secured.
also had to do the same to my carrier

I bought the 14k unit of that last year. Instead of a 30 minute install the fucker took me 4 hours to get in place. I bought a Frigidaire to replace it when it wouldn’t put out cold air a couple weeks ago.
Fuck that units design

Because it’s not really GE but a Chinese company that licensed the use of the name. At least when you buy Haier or some garbage like that you know what you're in for, but the use of the GE name leads to higher expectations that won't be met.

Good old zombie brands.

Stand alone/Floor units/Not window mounted units are few dollars more, but whole house doesn’t vibrate when compressor turns on and you don’t need to gut the unit to install wing parts

Exactly. I’m old, so I remember when a lot of these brands were marks of quality, but now it’s the same old name slapped on garbage. I have a vintage Dual 1219 turntable that was made in Germany, has a nice wood base, and is a very high-quality piece of equipment. Then I’m at Walmart and see the same name and logo on a cheap PoS car stereo and weep a little for the days gone by. So many examples out there that I can't even keep track. But there is still good stuff out there, but it may not have a brand that's familiar. It's all about the research.

But then you have to run a drain or empty a bucket 6 times a day.

I have 2 units. We live in a high humidity area. The units only needed to be drained once last year. They also have an option to install a drain tube. My newest one has a heat function also. That will help keep the furnace off longer. Propane is exspensive.

If I remember correctly, there are units that don’t collect condensation.
This one for instance says it will collect water only if used as dehumidifier
