Just got back from Honda, where the passenger-side airbag (or at least the inflator) in my 2003 Odyssey was replaced as part of a new recall. I think they’ve replaced the driver-side airbag at least twice since I bought it, but why did it take 16 years to decide to recall the passenger bag? Somebody must have died. Or else my service rep only now discovered that it hadn’t been done earlier.

the defect wasn’t disclosed until 2014, and they didn’t immediately order a recall of
all
Takata inflators because at first it wasn’t made clear they were all potentially defective. most likely your driver side inflator was among the first to be recalled, and the passenger one was added to the campaign later and replacements are now available.

Maybe because of limted production and installation capacity. T he passenger airbag shoots up and as such an exploding inflator may not be the same hazard as the one pointed at your face. I suppose that leads to the question why replace the passenger side at all?

I love how they’re delaying recalls on cars so they can more easily pay for it and provide new airbags. The problem was that pervasive and they didn't just learn that certain cars had those airbags, they knew it all along

I guess they’re just being thorough.

My rep said that somebody from a Takata shrapnel airbag just a few month ago. They were driving an older Civic that had been sold on a few times and the current driver never got notice of the recall.

For nearly a year , I was advised to avoid having front passengers in my Accord while they waited for the updated passe nger frontal airbag inflator parts. This was not a huge deal for us but could be a huge deal for single-car families.
Oddly, this also happened to my wife’s brand new Jeep due to assembly defects possibly leaving metal screws in the vicinity of the airbag inflator. No front passengers for 3 months to wait for the new parts .

We’ve put over 200k miles on our Odyssey, many of those with my wife or kids in the front passenger seat. We did the driver bag recalls as soon as they came out. I didn’t know until yesterday that there was an issue with the pax air bag.
