BMW working with composer
Hans Zimmer on e-car noises
.
For motor heads, one of life’s most satisfying sounds is the roar of a powerful engine. But unlike traditional cars, electric vehicles are practically silent. To fill the void, BMW has enlisted Hollywood film composer Hans Zimmer to create the sounds for its future electric cars.
Zimmer, whose award-winning scores include The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, The Lion King, and 12 Years a Slave, worked with Renzo Vitale, an acoustic engineer at the German carmaker, to make “drive sounds” and “sound signs” for BMW’s Vision M Next.

This is dumb, literally just license the noise from The Jetsons and it’ll be good.

Will every Hans Zimmer car score have a couple of moments of sounding really epic right up until it gets really familiar and you start to think you recognize it from another car that was also scored by Hans Zimmer? I think right about then another instrument or set of vocals will come in to help disguise the fact.
/busting on Hans Zimmer - I like his scores, especially Pirates, but lawdy the man self-plagiarizes. Even compared to John Williams.

I loved the 12 Years a Slave soundtrack, especially the Ray Parker Jr title track!

Why are people so afraid of silence? If you don’t like it, just turn on music or an audio book. I realize car companies have been manipulating sound for a long-time, but artificial sound just doesn’t sit right with me. If you must include it, at least give me a way to turn it off.

Yeah, hopefully you can turn it off, but from the auto maker’s perspective, they need some noise from the engine/motor and transmission to cover up a lot of the noises that the car makes, but are imperceptible because of the engine noise. If your motor is nearly silent, then the tire noise, squeaks, rattles, etc. become a lot more evident.
I live out in the country. There is zero man-made noise at night (beside my own AC unit, refrigerator, etc.). I love the quiet, but i f the AC’s not running, I can hear a dog barking from a mile away in the middle of the night . Silence is great, but comes with other challenges.

I want it to be my horn sound, as well as the bonging you get when you leave your keys in it

Could be the horn for the truck in the remake of Duel.

We have a sound machine in each of our kids rooms, and my wife likes to have our Alexa play ocean sounds. That being said, in my car i prefer music. If I have the windows down, i do sometimes turn everything off and just listen to my vehicle and nature.

On a nice day, or on a cold one with the heater cranked, I love windows down and just listening to my car and what’s outside.
