US-60 between Gauley Bridge and Ansted is pretty darn cool. Plus Gauley Bridge at 60 is gorgeous .
And when you reach A nsted, if somehow you haven’t figured out this is coal country, there’s a nice reminder. Is this technically a statue?
( Speaking of coal country, there’s a nice stretch of US-52 in Ohio with three towns in rapid succession named to help you remember where you are : Franklin Furnace, Ironton, and Coal Grove. If you’re ever passing through, stop by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in Franklin Furnace and try the cheeseburger. You won’t regret it.)
I tried to visit the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in Huntington, but despite their published schedule they weren’t open. I’m hoping that was a fluke and not a permanent closure , and I’ve left a message asking them to call me to tell me whether they’ll be open next weekend when I return westward.
There’s also a railroad museum nearby, so maybe I’ll get lucky and catch a two-fer.
This is, believe it or not, a purebred German Shepherd. I’m drawing a blank on both his name and his owner’s, despite the fact that I met them less than 4 hours ago.
I drove up their hill to take a photo of the town below, Boomer.
As it turned out, the railroad you can just see beyond the town was exactly where this massive derailment occurred.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Among other cool things to photograph, there are churches here. Lots and lots of churches. Including a historic church built in 1853, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
You can see car photos, both in my earlier car show post and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Unfortunately I just figured out that the software that I use to create the tracks, and upload photos along the way, doesn’t record the GPS location in the metadata of the photos I take with it . Irony, thy name is Loc atoweb .
So, I’m done with uploading photos there. Maybe even done with the software itself. Maddening.
I leave you with one last amusement.

Great photos! I have been to Ironton. A friend of my father is from there and we went squirrel hunting around there.
Stay safe out there!

I love SE Ohio. Good driving roads, nice folks and some good views. (hopefully I get to tackle them someday in something better handling than a minivan)

That looks like a great trip, and I envy you. Many people do not realize the beauty that can be found throughout Appalachia .
Over the many years, I have traversed the length of Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, driven Tail of the Dragon, and explored the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Unfortunately, none of my journeys have included very much of West Virginia. After seeing your photographs, that is going to change.

It looks like it was really nice. I had to drive Pittsburgh to Greenvile, SC and back this weekend. I am envious because I did not have time to slow down and enjoy the sights.

That last one reminds me of the Mystery Shack on Gravity Falls.
