If you are given the option of this Kraft fat-free Ranch, do yourself a favor and avoid it like the plague. I was looking forward to my salad this evening, but this stuff ruined it, and I couldn’t finish it; I would have been better off eating the salad without dressing.

It’s sweet, in a sickening, cloying kind of way, with no creaminess whatsoever. The spices that make ranch ranch are nonexistent. It’s everything bad about low-calorie food neatly contained in one disgusting little pouch. Food like this is exactly why people who are on a diet are miserable. There are much better options out there, I’m sure, and sometimes the best option may just be raw vegetables.

I only use Newman’s own and whichever brand offers Russian dressing at wherever I’m shopping, so I will heed your advice.

Fat-free ranch is virtually always  bad.

Weirdly, their fat-free Italian is really good. So is the fat-free Catalina dressing.

For me the only salad dressings are Hellmanns thousand island dressing and Heinz salad cream.

It’s  easy to stay with a diet when presented with hospital food. I did talk someone into bringing me barely adequate coffee from the nurse’s station in the morning.

Im yet to find something that beats vinegar, a bit of salt, and olive oil on a salad. But then again I’m one of those weirdos that sometimes has salad without any dressing.

Hanging in there. Test results show that the medicine is doing its job, so I’ll probably be out of here on Monday. I don’t feel much different, but then again I’m just laying around in a hospital bed, with the only exertion being sitting up for meal time.

I usually don't go for ranch being a blue cheese guy myself, but I know that's an acquired taste. Nothing wrong with a good ranch, but this isn't a good ranch. If I'm going lower calorie I'll usually take a vinaigrette, but BC if I'm splurging. I know it's not good for me, but that's what makes it so good...

I frequently see Heinz salad cream at the odd little places I like to shop, but haven’t tried it yet. I guess I should grab a bottle and give it a shot even though it’s kind of pricy over here.

Whilst cleaning up the fridge the other day I noticed that I had three different kinds of blue cheese dressing. That’s my usual fave, especially on wings.

I discovered these things a few years ago. I have to limit my purchase of them to once or twice a year because I will open a bag and not stop until it's empty...

I know what you mean. It reminds me of my college days, eating at the cafeteria. I had a simple rule - of you can't identify it, don't eat it. I was rather picky (mom is an excellent cook) and I thought I was going to starve that first year...

Exactly - simpler is better, and your recipe is what I use at home most of the time, although I may mix up the recipe with lime juice, sesame oil or rice vinegar depending on the main course.

I’m always in favor of anything that has vinegar .

It works great on salads, adds a slight tang. Also good in place of mayonnaise with eggs (or tuna, ham, etc...)   in a sandwich

The main difference between mayonnaise and salad cream, is salad cream uses more vinegar than oil. In that salad cream uses two sevenths the amount of oil and contains only a third the fat of mayonnaise.

It's good stuff. I'll have to get your e-mail address or something sometime and send out a British care package.

Yum - that sounds great. My mother makes her own mayo (and taught me) and makes it on the tangy sid e, which sounds like salad cream. That’s what I grew up with, and that’s the flavor I love. It’s especially good on artichokes; she would cook them with lemon slices in the water for a little extra flavor, and of course I do the same.

One strange culinary thing I grew up with was mayo on broccoli. I remember being in an old girlfriend’s wedding and broccoli was served with dinner. I didn’t see any mayo so I didn’t know how to eat it! These days I usually just use lemon juice instead, saving the mayo for special occasions.

Thanks for the offer of a care package. That sounds fantastic. Just make sure it has a mint Aero bar, some liquorice and black current hard candies and some tasty loose leaf tea. I have a Breville tea maker that I swear I’m going to wear out because I use it so much. I know I have to repair a crack in the basket, but so far it’s OK.

Let me know if there are any American specialties you’d like me to send your way as thanks. I love watching the Try channel on YouTube where Irish people try things from all over the world, but there seems to be a lot of American stuff that they get to taste. I like all sorts of old flavors from around the world, but some of my co-workers don’t have the same appreciation for them. Many of the Latino folks I gave black liquorice to thought it was weird and tasted like medicine, but to me it’s just a favorite flavor. It took me a little while to get used to their candies with chili powder on them as that’s not something I’m used to, but perfectly normal for them.

I can be reached at bandley3 at Mac dot com. Internet bonus points i f you can figure out what my email address means, but Google will probably give you an easy answer...

Is fat free Ranch even technically Ranch?

No creaminess, no spices, no flavor - I’d say no. It’s Ranch in name only. I can call a blender  a doorknob but that doesn’t help me get through the door...

Should be easy for me to avoid - ranch of any kind disgusts me.

Feeling better?

Not a big ranch fan myself. Like ketchup, it’s something you’re not likely to  find i n my house.

According to the nurses I’m on the mend. Kinda hard to tell since the problems only occur under exertion, and I’ve spent the last day and a half laying a round in bed. A little bit of a cough and wheezing, but that just feels normal to me.

I’ve sent a test e-mail.

I often watch Americans try British foods.

It’s funny because they read the name, try it and then try and explain it (often wrong), when on the back of the wrapper it goes into detail what it is and then lists it’s ingredients. I feel like many videos could be improved by a token Brit or Irish person being there to explain what it is. Lol.

I’ll have to see if we still sell mint Aero balls as well as the bars.

I’m not a liquorice fan myself but my mother loved the stuff.

There was a video or two done about tastes from around the world. Some nationalities preferred spicy food, some salty food, some sweet food, etc...

Glad the medicine is working - hopefully you’ll be out and about and back to yourself soon enough! :)
