Mostly plumbed ( pneumoed?!?) up. Im like 90% the PO had it wrong, it now matches the diagram in the manual

That being said, there still is no matching port for the (as far as i know inoperable) vacuum driven cruise control, although there are two spare ports on the back, neither is of the large hose diameter. Also the hood is back on!

Still left on the engine: ne w dipstick tube, rear bolts on both headers, starter reinstall, wiring harness, new negative battery cable, accessories.

A previous owner screwed something up? Color me shocked!  That said I’m glad mine only has the trans, distributor and power brake vacuum lines.

That must be nice. A lthough this wasn’t “that” hard, it did take most of today futzing with it.

ah, those weird years when GM was slowly getting rid of division-specific engines and you could find Olds engines in Pontiacs and Chevys.

the worst was when they phased out the Olds 307; to use them up the last few years (‘88 -90) the Chevy Caprice wagon had the Olds 307, but all of the parts guides back then just said the 8th VIN character was “V8 5.0 liter.” getting alternators or water pumps from parts jobbers was an exercise in frustration because the sedan had the 305 Chevy with the same VIN code, and they’d insist the car I was working on was a 305. I’d be all like “look, you sumbitch, it has the oil fill neck up front and Olds-style valve covers. it’s a fucking 307!” I’d go back and forth with them for a bit, they’d relent, I’d get the part, and lo and behold they’d give me something for a 305.

This year was pretty sucky, as the manual was only available with the pontiac 400, which was discontinued in 1978 and they only had leftovers so only like 1/4 of cars got them. It was also available... With the credit option pontiac "boat anchor" 301 v8.

My ‘79 403 suffered from carb problems.  Now, I wasn’t much of a diagnostician and never figured out why it would vapor lock fairly often.  I did try a carb rebuild kit, but that didn’t fix it so I ended up buying a Holley 650CFM Quadrajet replacement and it ran pretty well with that.

The evap system is supposed to prevent that. I still need a new charcoal canister but i did replace all the lines.

Definitely a spaghetti monster, working on the "flying" part still.
