This box is too big and heavy for my car. Let the craigslisting begin. It felt like I was driving with a huge sale on top of my car and around 70 acceleration was glacial paced. I think it weighs around 50-60 lbs and is 84" long by 30" wide. It’s huge.

A sedan with a roof box isa good example of why wagons are better

However, a wagon with a roof box is even better!

My mazda has 150 horse power and I have to drive on highways at montana speeds, it would get there but I could really feel it.

Strangely I have a thule cascade box that is wider, and very much shorter, and it is much better.

I still can’t put 204 cm skis in a wagon without the tips being on the dashboard. That is why I got the box, to protect the skis from road grime. I have a scissor ski rack that I put back on for the skis. The box is also a hassle to reach into to get shit out.

162hp NA
EJ25.. but I stayed pretty close to BC 100km/h
(62ish mph) with it loaded. I’m sure aero gets terrible exponentially beyond that..

We drive 100 kph on our county roads. 70-85 mph on the highways. I’ll even go >85 on the interstate if the conditions permit.

Looks like it’s mounted too far back and pointing up, thus creating a bunch of drag. I think I have the same box which I use on my WRX. Other than casting a shadow on my windshield, I hardly notice it. The best gas mileage I ever got was with the box on top. It was a Scouting camp out, so I was limited to the speed of the truck pulling the trailer. That affected the mileage more than the box ever did. Being mounted properly has a big effect on the aerodynamics which has a big effect on the mileage.
Here it is on our Explorer:
And on a loaner Outback:
And with a bike on board:
If there’s anything I’d change, it’s the mounting system and the rear angle. The more recent models are much easier to mount and the angle at the back lets the hatch open without hitting the box.
I used to keep the box mounted all the time so I could carry around high-jump standards since our private school track team had access to high-jump pits at the local high school, but they wouldn’t let us use any of the other equipment.

This has to do terrible things to fuel economy too! Number one reason I just let me skiis live on the roof out in the open for ~4000 mile trip this winter. I figured the gas savings alone could pay for my whole season’s wax lol. They were absolutely filthy when I arrived in SLC and it did trash my wax, but otherwise no issues the rest of the trip with shorter and less snowy drives.

It was just sitting on the car in the photo’s. When I had it mounted it was much farther forward. I also have a thule cascade box that is about 60" long and a bit wider. It doesn’t have nearly the effect aerodynamically as this thing does. But it is not long enough to accommodate skis. I went back to the scissor ski rack I have been using and now I’m trying to recoup my costs.

If I’m driving any significant distance I will fold the rear seat down and put the skis inside the car. They barely fit, but they fit.

Honestly, 80# and a couple square feet of frontal area shouldn’t even be noticeable except for a 1-2mpg penalty on the highway. I’ve had a bag with 4x the frontal area of that on my 190hp wagon on numerous occasions and you’d never know it was there except for a wee bit of wind noise.
Have you tried removing the deflector? That’s probably not helping at all. It’s creating a wedge from which the wind can’t easily escape. See TheRealBicycleBuck’s pics for comparison -- air flows cleanly underneath the box, which is more ideal.

I am set on selling this box to help fund my 1970 Datsun Z car. I didn’t think about removing the deflector, it’s on there to keep the wind noise down, but not a bad idea if I’ve got a box up there.

My other cars are a wagon, a hatch back, and a pick-up. So a proper sedan is needed.

I ended up doing that the last day of my trip because my friend had already gone home so I only had 2 sets of skiis to deal with instead of 3. And of course no more passenger. Skiis fit window to window diagonally (longer ones are 171). I can remove my back seat and fit them there through the trunk but I didnt have the space and that is a hassle anyways. But the motivation was that I got 18mpg doing 100% highway on the last tank and I wanted to make it home without having to stop more than once after the UT/NV border. Doing 90mph on cruise control (which was only 10 over the whole time) with a ski rack does bad things for my gas mileage lol. I was going about 80 with no rack and managed 23mpg for the remainder of the trip.

I think my car would do 90 with skis on top, I’d rather take the rack off tho and go super aero.

Pretty sure my basket is heavier with more frontal area , my engine is likely making less power right now, and my van weighs more, yet I never notice a difference between basket on/off, other than a couple mpg penalty.

It’s a larger % weight and frontal area on my Mazda vs a larger car like a mini van hence (at least how I think) a greater effect on the driving dynamics.

That looks like a lot of lift. All the air pushing up on the front nose of the box.

Idk man, seems a stretch.
I mean, I could see at/above 80 mph, but normal acceleration, I doubt it.

I would take that for my Volvo if you were not 2000+ miles away. I definitely notice the box up there but it’s not awful. And it sure does fit a ton of stuff.
