Is it possible to get locked inside an ELR? I guess so, because I just got off the phone with a member, a senior woman, who was locked inside. Claims she was suffocating. I know the ELR has those weird button door releases. The biggest question though, and shows why I hate people, is why the hell is she calling us and not Onstar?

Just like with the C6 ‘Vette, it’s possible if the sales person didn’t explain, or the buyer didn’t research the manual release tab. It’s not even that hard to find here.

If it’s like the Corvette then yes, it is possible for an idiot to “lock” themselves inside the car.
Someone actually died in a C6 Corvette because the battery died and they didn’t know where the BIG RED DOOR RELEASE was. After that story I double checked the next C6 I got, and yeah, IT’S SUPER OBVIOUS.

Call her back!
“ The only way to open the door is with the emergency door lever on the floor in front of and to the side of the seat.”

Who's "us"? Are you at a dealership?

Dumb. And goes back to me saying why I hate people. I get panicking or whatever but still. Even if I had tried to explain this too her, she more than likley would’ve gotten mad and complained that I was endangering her life.

I remember hearing about someone died. I couldnt understand how that was possible. But people, are for the most part, dumb as hell.

I recall someone almost died in an XLR becau se he didn't know of the manual releases and the battery died, trapping him inside

She’s good now. Somehow she figured out that she should’ ve called Onstar and they opened the car for her.

Nah. I should’ve clarified . I work for AAA.

Yea I remember that. Sad but don’ t get how someone could be so dumb. You think I would sit there and suffocate inside my own vehicle without trying to break out or honk the horn or something for help? An d then GM gets a bad rap for peoples stupidity

So dumb in fact, they can kill themselves.

Slightly worse than that, his little dog died too:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Glad to hear it. I could imagine getting a little freaked out in a situation like that...

HE KILLED HIS DOG?!?!?!?
WOW. That’s beyond terrible. It’s not the dog’s fault his owner is a fucking idiot.

I always found them to be clearly labelled, but I was also 100% sure that they would not design a car that would allow you to be stuck inside, so there’s that...
![]() 06/24/2019 at 15:51 |

Yea the whole thing came out as unnecessary and extra for no other reason to come across as advanced.

While I know there is a manual redundancy and that this person is just dumb: why do we need battery powered doors? What’s wrong with a latch?
Don't get me wrong, I love power windows and proximity keys because they are quicker and/or require less effort, but a door latch isn't the same as manual crank windows. If you can rotate your new-fangled dial shifter into "D", you can open a door latch.

Yeah... it’s sad these days how hopeless some people can be.

I mean it was an old guy, probably couldn't have broken the glass. I'm sure he tried. The release could have been better marked too.

I recall a news story from a few years back where an elderly couple were “ trapped” in their new Mazda3 for hours, it turned out there was no malfunction and they just didn't know how to unlock it.

I wondered the same thing. It all came across as extra for no reason because the vehicle is an EV and they had to come across as advanced.

If she's anything like my grandmother, she probably doesn't know how to use OnStar. Mine still doesn't really know how to even work her digital thermostat, didn't even turn on the air conditioning for the first 4 or so years she lived in Florida.

Not to mention ITS A CONVERTIBLE!!!!
I have one myself. Three manual latches, and off comes the roof. No electricity needed.
Yeah, you’ll probably scratch the paint tossing the roof onto the hood, but at least you’re alive.

Besides making it light up, I’m not sure how they could possibly make the manual release any more obvious. It’s a giant 3” long lever with a bright red icon located immediately next to the door.
The red icon clearly shows the door being opened.
![]() 06/24/2019 at 17:12 |

That really isn’t that obvious...
Honestly looks more like a hood/trunk/gas cap release. Maybe fancy interior door releases were a bad idea?
![]() 06/24/2019 at 17:47 |

I really truly don’t know what would make it more obvious (besides LED lighting or sequins or having it make noise).
I’ve accidentally pulled it once before while trying to open the gas filler cap. It’s the first lever you’d think to use. It’s in the most obvious location. W here else would you put a manual door release, the ceiling? It’s a convertible, so you’re limited to either the dashboard (which already has the trunk/fuel release buttons), or the floor next to the door.
The electric doors are a dumb design idea in the first place , but you can’t fault GM for the size/design/placement of their manual release lever.

I really can't think of a better way to do it, but honestly, yes, the electric door releases were a bad idea

A guy and his dog died of heat exhaustion in a Corvette after the battery died.
![]() 06/24/2019 at 21:03 |

Apparently when the battery dies on a Corvette the horn doesn’t work. And old people panicking in a car that has probably reached temps in excess of 120F aren’t going to be able to kick through a window.
Really dumb design changing thebway the door functions when the battery dies. I could see it being a bigger problem who get in an accident where they are disoriented and the car loses power.

If the battery on the car died OnStar won’t be able to do anything.
