I noticed that my valve cover had some cracks and missing pieces. Replaced the gaskets. Hoping to stop the idling misfiring. I’m pretty sure that’s oil... I’d love to not remove the valve cover again.

Start with the basics. Find which cylinder is misfiring first. This can be done by a cylinder power balance test (YouTube has plenty of examples) . Then After identifying the bad cylinder, swap the coil and spark plugs with another cylinder to see if the misfire follows.

If your valve cover is cracked and/or missing pieces, it needs replaced not just a new gasket.

Have you already isolated the miss to ignition on this cylinder, or still just scoping out possibilities at this point?

I’ve tested each cylinder. Swapping plugs and coils. Checked vaccum lines as well. I only discovered the crack last night. It was in one piece the last time I did the VANOS rebuild. It went from random misfire, to misfire cylinder 3/5, then back to random. It only happens at idle and idle only. I replaced the MAF. I thing I could have a bad one, or the DISA valve. I think I need to do a spark test just to be completely sure.

It’s throwing a P0300(random misfire) and occasional misfire on cylinders 3/5. }I have switched the coils and plugs around. The weird thing is that I haven’t lost power. It doesn’t misfire at all under load, only when initially idling.
