Very excited for Sunday when I get to pick up my new 540i. Purchased solely as a donor for my e34, it’ll provide all the little bits I need to get back on the road, as well as an engine that will add some oomph.
It’s an auto with a bad valve body, so it’s the perfect candidate to make my 530 into a 540. Even if the engine isn’t good to swap though, the parts I need alone already will pay for themselves and I’ll be back on the road. But the potential to go from 215 hp (original stated figures here of course) to 280 with little effort is awesome! Basically everything down to the ecu can be reused (though I will chip it with 540 software) since the 4.0 is just bored out version of my motor.
Could not be more excited! Pic of my freshly waxed coupe for your time

When I was a teenager, I wanted nothing more than an E34 540i with some performance mods, mainly Dinan cams, and a manual.

T hat’s still a dream for me. I looked around when I was buying my first car at 18, I can gladly say I didn’t pull the trigger on an E34 or E39 540 because that is NOT a car to be hooned daily and relied on for getting my everywhere everyday. One day though, I will get me an E34.

I didn’t get to buy a car until I was 24. I would love one, but the E34 M5 has stolen my heart. I thought I’d be DDing my M3, which is why I got it as opposed to a classic M car. That said, if I had to do it again, I’d probably get an E30 M3.

An E39 M62 isn’t but an E34 is pretty bulletproof. Only issue I’ve had in 10,000 miles of beating it every day and across half the country was the original radiator breaking. M60s can go a long time with not too much work, and outside of bushings there’s not too much else to go wrong on the e34 there’s barely any electronics to worry about.
Never had any worries about using mine daily, and I think the m60b40 should Ben similar (mine is an m60b30 so similar v8 just lower power)

I do understand that Era of bmw's was much less electrical reliant, especially compared to the E39s. But all the E34s I could find that were anywhere near my price range were rusted and neglected. Woe was me lol but it's good to hear yours has handled abuse well!

I found mine with only 61k on the clock for 4000. Again tho it’s not a 540, but the 215 horse V8 is plenty for me, super fun handles well and rides better than a lot of new cars. Had to do bushings all around but yeah rock solid other wise and way cheaper than the other alternatives I considered like financing a manual 128i or getting a newer FiST after my Z3 broke. Instead I got an E34, fixed the Z3, crashed the e34 and now here I am lol
This is what we'll show whenever you publish anything on Kinja:

M60's with the double row timing chain are effing indestructible. Hell, my non vanos M62 has nearly a million km on it and has never failed to go go go like a bat out of hell. I mean, the cooling system has exploded like a dozen times or so, but damned if the mofo won’t die.
The rest of the car is literally crumbling around it, but darned if that engine doesn’t just keep givin’ ‘er.
I’ll probably end up crushing it.
