1) “Y’all” - I won’t lie, it’s fucking adorable how you say it. You say it imbued with such warmth that I want to walk in and out of restaurants just to be greeted. In contrast, in California we have “dude,” which makes us sound stupid and we use a delivery that is either entirely valid or dripping with passive aggressive contempt. Bravo, Texas. You rule.

2) Common Sense Left Turns. Here, they have signals that protect your turn with a green arrow, but also turn yellow so you have to yield, but can still turn left when the light is green and oncoming traffic is clear. In California you are just protected or unprotected.

3) Friendliness. Man, people are nice here. When you look lost, they offer directions. Not just in the street, but in a department store. It doesn’t feel patronizing, it just feels nice. As a lifelong misanthrope, I find this welcoming behavior confusing.

4 ) You think it’s hot here. It is just the cutest thing how people keep apologizing for the weather. This ain’t hot people. I’m from Fresno - I know hot, and this is not hot. It’s lovely. A little sticky and sweaty, but I’m ok with that. It’ll take more than this to scare us off, Texas.

Never change, Texas. I am a fan.

I did Austin earlier this year and I agree, good state. Austin gets a lot of rep for being very blue, but I felt like they were respectfully inoffensive when it came to politics. California could learn from that. The crap that comes out of people’s mouths when they blindly assume everyone agrees with them doesn’t seem to happen in Austin .

Better than the left-turn yellow (which we have in PA) are the dedicated U-turn lanes around intersections. They make U-turns so much safer and faster. It helps to have lots of space sometimes.

The Texas turnaround is good, but it’s necessitated by their insistence on using frontage roads everywhere, which while convenient for some things, are terrible from a traffic flow and safety perspective.

The left turn thing is the first thing I noticed when I moved to CA. YIELD ON GREEN!!! It is not a hard concept! There are roads where this would be dangerous, of course, but don’t give me a red arrow at every light!!!

The heat in the south isn’t bad yet, assuming Texas is like West TN. End of July through Sept is truly brutal. It is the same temperature as Fresno, but also with a healthy dose of humidity. Dry heat is still hot, but the wet heat is deadly. Especially when you are trying to run 80-100 mile weeks -_-

Flashing yellow turn signals are the best. Especially if there’s still a solid green arrow to get a left in when there's heavy traffic. I wish they were at every intersection.

Bellevue put in a bunch of those several years ago, then removed quite a few of them due to constant crashes - the local diverse driving skill can’t handle it, I suppose.

The y’all is good, but you have to pay attention to the “ bless your heart.” It  has two very different usages.

It’s not really hot at all down here right now. I think a lot of people are being courteous because a lot of our visitors from up North think it is.

The real heat starts sometime next month and goes into August.  We can easily have several weeks of over 100F. At least we’re plains weather up here.  Down in Houston, it’s not only hot, it’s also way more humid most of the time.

One down the street from me recently got re-mapped to only offer flashing yellow turns half as long as before. Super frustrating. It is somewhat hilarious to see how many people just ignore the red arrow and act like it's still a flashing yellow.

I’m siding with cali on #2. Too many people have turned left in front of me on the bike. I’ll take the extra 90 second wait in exchange

Man living in CA for over a decade I never even realized they don’t do left turn yield on greens. But yeah living in OR now it is mostly nice to have. Although there have been more than a few instances where I’ve been merrily going straight through the intersection and someone decided to make a left turn across right in front of me with waaayyyy too little room to spare.

So in populated areas i can definitely see the safety aspect of just not having that be an option. Although it definitely should be a thing in areas where there isn’t that much traffic, but then probably the wait for a green isn’t that long to deal with either though.

Some in Bellevue now only flash yellow during off-peak hours, to lessen the chance of a feckless drone turning left in front of oncoming traffic. Lots of those on the road here.

I won’t lie, I’ve turned left against red on empty roads before.   When there are no witnesses, it isn’t bad ;)

Fresno hot? Houston says hold my beer and takes the same heat and adds 99% humidity for 6 months.
