Today all remaining manual XJs vanished from local Craigslist. There are a couple 2-3 hours away still, but one is a 2-door which despite my aesthetic preference for same I’d rather not. Looking for practicality. And the other one is a bit steep at 5500.

A new one popped up in Fort Wayne but of course only because he clicked the wrong selection. Auto.

JeepJeremy’s friend of a friend isn’t responding to my inquiry about his manual XJ.

Today (or very recently) the only local manual Liberty also dropped off the radar. There’s one in Cincinnati but it’s on a lot and inexpensive which causes me to assume it’s got some significant flaws.

Plus, stick shift or not, it’s still a Liberty.

The 4Runner I checked out yesterday did indeed have a badly rusted out frame that I didn’t spot because it was dark and wet and whatever I goofed. Thank goodness for PPIs.

There are two manual 4Runners in the wide area, but both sketchy.

I’m about ready to take out a small loan to get a TJ ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! are both nice greens, but the cheaper one has the 4-banger which doesn’t enthuse me) and plan on putting the hard top back on my LJ, just to have a secure (ish) fixed roof SUV.

Kinja'd!!!

I do like that green. And it’s reasonably priced.

Shopping for boxes with sticks is getting too damned hard.

Ugh I was afraid that 4Runner was hiding a rusty frame.  Sorry man. You may want to consider looking in the Southwest and road tripping back.  Big off-road scene here with lots of manual Jeeps and Toyotas.  And a lot less rust.

Interesting idea. If I’d planned ahead with my week off maybe I could have done that instead.

Thanks for the suggestion. Probably can’t do it any time this summer but if the search continues to frustrate me, maybe this fall.

My friend with a rusted frame fixed and fixed twice, liberty goes anywhere in the woods. It rides so much nicer than the 4 cyl wangler. He dailies it to work from a seasonal road in MI. It is  shot but works great local. I have to have new bfg at s to meet him at the ice fishing spot in the Caddylanche. He has crap tires.

I should have test driven the local manual Liberty while it was still up for sale. I tend to think they suffer more for having replaced the iconic XJ, vs actually being bad vehicles.

On the other hand, they really don’t do anything for me aesthetically, and I like having a solid axle up front.

I have helped replace the front wheel bearings twice. He bought it new. 07 w/ 120k miles. The Libert y looks are terrible. Not a worry in our hick town.

IFS is fine till you build a mud truck. Death wobble is no fun. I have only owned 3 cj7s , 2 Xjs and an old ford. Currently the fleet is 4 ifs trucks.

I forgot: it’s too early for their wonderful apple bread, but check out the Westside Local before you leave town.
