I installed Plex on the new media center PC and it’s working just fine. Yes, I’m still resentful for having to pay to use the DVR function, but my time is worth more than the $40 a year this will cost me. It’s quite nice being able to easily view my recorded TV programs on my phone and tablets. The web interface doesn’t really work all that well when sitting on the couch, but perhaps there’s an alternative. At the current time I have about one hour of experience with this software, so given a bit more time, say a day or two, I’ll get it figured out and tweaked to my needs...

You get used to the interface, or at least I did. When I started using it there was an option of just buying the phone connectivity for a one time fee. Is that no longer an option?

I do not believe that is an option anymore, Plex Pass seems to be your only choice now.
Are you viewing the PC using the TV as a monitor or are you using some other appliance to view the interface? I have my media pc in my office so its cable connected to a router. While I could go wireless for it the performance difference is noticeable, but that may be how ancient my media PC actually is at this point.

I’m using Chrome on a PC connected to a TV or monitor.
Looks like the thing I bought was a “Plex for Android Activation (Plex for Android)“ for $4.99 through Google Play, so that might not be what you’re looking for after all. I don’t use the DVR functionality at all so maybe that is the piece that requires a Plex Pass. Still, $40/yr is way less than Tivo charges iirc.
