I was awakened this morning by a phone call from a principal where I interviewed Friday. She offered me a job teaching science and social studies for 8th grade at a more local middle school. I have to take my Praxis II for middle school social studies but that’ll be easy. The craziest thing? I didn’t even apply for this specific job. I just posted my résumé and test scores on the school system’s job website.
This is where I shift down to second to hear the blowoff valve on Meepster pop
It’s a 7 -mile commute along a pair of twisty mountain roads.
I’m down. The best part is the money is the same but benefits cost a couple hundred dollars less.
Also, here’s my wife and me at my commencement last month:

Congrats! How common is it to have middle school teachers do multiple subjects? Mine were all only dealing with one field. Though I guess my 6th grade teachers (in elementary school) w ere multi-discipline, so that’s not so far off.

I know some teachers who definitely had problems finding jobs. Especially a problem for people getting started out because schools didn’t want to hire anyone without experience (which of course makes it difficult to get experience).

Nice!
I've now put 10 years in at a job that I didn't apply for. I had applied the previous year for a different job in the district, but never heard back for that one. The one I got the following year, they pulled my old application and called me.

Congrats! Know I know who I will share all my angst of having to deal with 8th graders with. I’m picking up a couple of 8th grade science sections due to how our schedule worked out, going to be strange going from seniors in AP to 8th graders in consecutive periods but whatever!

I had a similar problem when I was teaching, but it was university freshmen one hour, seniors & grad students the next.

Depends on the grade and subject level. Want to be a high school English or Social Studies teacher? Good luck. Want to teach PE at any level? You better be really good. Teach Special Ed? Or ELL, the world is your oyster.

Pretty common. Depends a lo t on the size of the school.

It will be interesting to say the least, but I also have a lot of latitude on how I teach the middle schooler s so I am pushing for minimal lecture lots of hands on.

That’s the best way to do it. What state are you in? I can send some activities for the 13-14 year olds if you like.

I am in Virginia, but at an Independent school so as long as I meet our internal curriculum I have a a bunch of freedom.

That’s cool. I’m looking at going for my MA in curriculum design. Are you aligned with NGSS or VA standards?

The state board of education has their own standards and such documentation that predates NGSS, and the tests are called SOLs (good job with that collection of letters! ). Ou r curriculum development and accreditation are done with the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, though it is very similar to what the public schools implement minus the testing.
