had the lines bled and got a new caliper at the back and new pads allround a week ago
had a bit of a brake squeek when i got it back just before coming to a stop wich i was told would sort itself out..
didnt.. i now has all the squeek again and not great brakes (also when it does bite its very juddery)
i figure this means
a : the rotors are dead and need replacing
b : the shop is incompetent and needs replacing
c : all of the above
(i have a feeling its c.... but all the shops round here are shit and i dont have the time to do most of the work meself... tho... i could do a rotor swap... just gotta pick up some loctite)

I’m no help here, but am slightly anxious about having to service the brakes on my bike. Have you ever done any MTB brakework?

Your rotors look fine, it’s possible they installed metallic pads and not organic pads. You want organic pads they are quiet and predictable. Metallic pads squeak and are grabby. You could try cleaning the rotors with rubbing alcohol. The pads are incredibly easy to change and they cost about $8 a set. I just did this on my kids bike and it took all of 15 minutes.

I’m having a similar issue. The handle doesn’ t seem soft but i cant get them to lock up the wheel. I got a brake bleed kit and it was a mess from step one. there is a catch can that is supposed to screw into the reservoir and it wouldn’ t tread so i had to make my own catch can.

that sounds like exactly the same thing.. handles are a little soft for me... but nothing major
but where normally if i squeeze the lever with all my might the bike stops well before i do
now it squeeks and judders as it slows

I would not use commercial brake cleaner on a bicycle. The pads are not like a car’s pads.

It seems like the answer is definitely b or c. If they just did work on the brakes, it's either 1) they botched it, and are incompetent, or b) the didn't botch it, the rotors are shot, but they didn't notice while working on the brakes, and are therefore incompetent, and also you need rotors.

The rotor would go bad from either a contaminated surface or excessive wear. You’d need to put a micrometer on the rotor to measure wear.
It’s somewhat common for new pads to squeal until they’re seated to the rotor. If the rotor surface is damaged or ruined with some contaminant , they might not stop squealing.

well.... whilst doing the brakes they did call me to mention that my chain and rear cassette are in extremely poor condition according to their metalometer thingie
thats where i stopped trusting them
1 : i told you to do my brakes the fuck are you doing playing around with a metalometer on parts that arent brake?
2 : said parts are 4 months old

Get your butt on the bike and pedal up to a good speed then slam on the brakes hard say 4-5 times to bed them in, it’s a thing on shimano brakes, it actually helps. Usually hydraulic discs are very reliable but I don’t understand why they don’t put Avid BB7's on most mid to lower level mountain bikes, they are dead reliable and very easy for the customer to maintain.

cheers :)
i dont mind the squeel.. (well i do) its the lack of braking power that really bothers me
gonna try cleaning them proper and have a few hard braking mega squeels to see if that helps

Avids are cable actuated so pretty easy to adapt.

Its VERY hard to wear our a disk unless they are terrible. The disks are either contaminated or the new pads need to be bedded in. I am real picky about my brake feel so i end up sanding pads and bedding them multiple times in their life.
If it just needs to be bedded (not contaminated pads) take the wheel off, clean the disk with a lint free rag with brake cleaner, find a nice long hill and ride down (pedaling
) while riding your brakes. Then turn around and ride back up (not hitting your brakes) and do it again and again and again. You will feel your brakes get progressively better and better and the squeal
(high frequency vibration) will go away.

i wouldnt slam on them (especially if its a front)
the
key to brake bedding is a nice evenly coated surface of brake pad transfer. I prefer
bedding while peddling
increasing brake pressure (not coming to a stop) over and over again until you can feel the improvements drop off.

As much as I like to bag on SRAM Guide’s (re- badged Avids) they have been pretty good other than the frozen brake levers that were replaced under warranty.
