Kinja'd!!!

Went fishing this morning on vacation in Michigan with the family.  It was cool (for Texans) and calm on the lake, and we did pretty well.  All the kids got to reel at least two in, and my younger daughter got a salmon, which is her favorite fish.  Fishing isn't my favorite thing to do, but better than being in the office.

I’ve tried to fish in my adult years but the last time I caught a fish was when I was 12. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

You should try the antique store and brewery in Douglas while your up here. You buy a beer and get a coupon for the antique store. That was a few years ago but it was a really cool place.

Looks like fish caught you!

I loved to “fish” when I was a kid, and by that I mean experience the sheer joy in flaunting my own mortality by wilding slinging around a large, sharp, barbed hook covered in worm guts without eye protection. After 5 minutes I’d get bored and go do something else.

I recently revisited fishing, and twenty years later I’ve discovered that I positively love it . I frequently go on work travel to a test site that is less than a mile away from one of the top bonefishing spots in the world. I really couldn’t have given a shit less, but I finally relented and let a colleague guide me down to the flats, and now I’m hooked (pu n intended). I never knew fishing could be so interesting or involved. There’s an art and a science to stalking bonefish on the flats (one I admittedly haven’t mastered yet). I still haven’t caught one but it’s fun as hell to try, and if you pay attention you see some really awesome stuff out there.

After that experience I’ve been revisitng fishing off the pier, lake shore, and small craft and I find it incredibly relaxing.  If nothing else, don’t bait your hook so you won’t be interrupted enjoying a beer.  Even if you don’t catch fish, you can always catch a buzz.

How do store and carry fishing gear? I would like a clean way to store rods and reels but so far they just all wind up in a bag which gets neglected.

If there's time, head over to Holland if you want to see some more cool stuff that's family friendly. I'm in Grand Rapids which is pretty much beer, beer, and fancy art stuff. Not really the best for kids, but for a date night there's lots to see and do.

I LOVE beer.  I also have kids, and I think we are doing some Dutch town thing tomorrow.

I have a few different rigs, my travel one plus a few small ones for local pond/river fishing. Currently t hey are all leaning in a corner in the spare room where I keep all my other hobby type stuff. I am going to build a rack, eventually, when I get around to it...

As for transport, my bonefishing rig I take to the Bahamas is pre tty minimalist. The rod is a 4 piece rod that came with a nylon roll that has 4 pockets, one for each section, that rolls up and ties neatly. I got a big green dry bag and I put my reel and tackle in that, and it all goes in the suitcase. Then when I get there, I assemble the rod and reel and when we go to the flats to fish I can throw my ID, camera, bug spray, Leatherman tool, and tackle in the dry bag. It has a nylon mesh pouch on the outside that I put my bait (shrimp) in. When I get done fishing I can disassemble everything and rinse it all off, and pack it back up. Bonefishing tackle is minimal - I use jig hooks (the kind that have weights already cast o n them). I got a small plastic box with like 4-6 compartments and all I take are a few different size hooks, and some split shot I can crimp on the line if I need extra weight to buck the wind.

Here’s a setup that’s really close to my travel rig, basically just a different reel. I use a Cabela’s Salt Stri ker SS50, which they don’t make anymore. Since the Bass Pro merger they are carrying Bass Pro reels as the store brand and I don’t think they are nearly as nice as the Cabela’s brand stuff was.
