“The evidence on the scene shows Aubert was using a torch to cut open what was believed to be an empty metal drum labeled as methanol when the explosion happened." Oof.

It’s like they  should put warning labels on those barrels of methanol or something.

This is how one of my best friend’s dad died. He made a living doing trailer repairs and was one of the few who would touch tankers. The procedure was to have a man enter the manhole and power-wash the trailer from the inside. A washed trailer was safe for welding. We were out of school at the time, so my friend was the man doing the washing.

On the day he died, the trailer they were planning to repair had been washed and was in the shop when another driver arrived with a “rush” job. They pulled the tanker out of the shop and brought in the other truck. It didn’t take long to make that repair, so when my friend went to re-wash the tanker, his dad told him it should be fine and to pull the tanker back into the shop.

He was wrong.

The repair involved something on one of the manholes. He climbed on top of the trailer and was leaning over the manhole when the welder sparked. It was like dropping a match into a wine bottle. The vapors in the tanker created a jet out the top of the trailer, propelling him into the air. The back of his head hit one of the trusses supporting the shop roof before he came tumbling down to land on the concrete below.

My friend was a volunteer fireman and was working on his EMT certification at the time. He and one of the neighbors worked on his dad for nearly an hour waiting for emergency services to arrive. They did a quick assessment and called for the coroner.

I think this is why he didn’t pursue a career in paramedics.
