Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 24

In the back of our property, partially obscured behind a bush, is a small plate with an inscription. We have asked a lot of people about the meaning, but no one can even identify the language.

Kinja'd!!!

Inscription

Sorry, this is not automotive related, but we are really curious about it. Does anyone know anything about the inscription?

I hope that it is not something offensive or obnoxious. Many years ago, I worked with a woman who had a wrought iron gate with some decorative Chinese letters fabricated for her front walkway. She did not know what the letters meant – they just looked nice. One day, a coworker told her that the combination of letters roughly translated into “House of Filthy Pigs.” I am really not sure if that was true, since he did not like her, but she had the letters on the gate modified.

Super cool mystery!

I have absolutely no idea, but I do know that some old Chinese coins and charms had square holes in them. They seem to always be holes in the center but that square outline section made me think of them.

Maybe there are some Asian culture museums or groups in your area you show it to?   Let me know if you ever find out what it m eans!

Yes, I see what you mean about the square hole. The inscription is probably Chinese, but it doesn’t seem to match any Chinese letters that I have seen. The style just looks Chinese.

May I suggest https://www.reddit.com/r/translator ?

Someone over there should be able to figure it out!

By the way, this is Oppositelock , a place where we can discuss things non-automotive if we like. Odd signs are welcome here!

OK, I looked a little more closely at your link. The symbol at the top of the Chinese coins looks just like the first symbol on the inscription.

Vietnamese Chu Nom  script resembles Chinese a bit, maybe that’s what it is?

Thank you. I will post it there later today.

First, it is time for a ride. Sunny, 82 degrees, and a full tank of gas.

I will look into that. In our part of Florida, we do not have a very large Asian population, so there are not a lot of people to ask.

The inscription on the right is easier to read. Something 4th year 3rd month. Can’t read some of the other characters but I think it’s to commemorate a date, maybe the completion of a building?

(Source: me being an Asian dude. But I haven’t really used Chinese outside of ordering food for a couple decades now)

Again, I dont know anything, but i do know that the order of the symbols are just as important as the symbols themselves. A symbol c an have a different interpretation depending on what symbols it’s next to.

Found this site and gave it a quick scan. Might be helpful if you want to play detective!

Probably just faster to ask other, more specific parts of the internet though.

I can only read the cluster on the right:

-> An organization that managed the stamps and operator cards for Chosun (North Korea today)

-> “Moon” number, two horses. Don’t know exactly but it was common back then to use “Sun”, “Moon” to designate groups. Two horses might mean there are two horses inscripted in the back

-> Third month of the 4th year of Tin Kai, a date code. This date should be in the Ming Dynasty. It’s around 1624 AD.

The character in the square (I’m guessing) is the stamp inscription of the Emperor at the time, which are used in official items/documents.

This is the face text of it, not sure if this is a reproduction or something.

Thank you. That is the most anyone has been able to decipher.

I am even more curious why it is mounted in the back of our yard.

Thank you. This house was built in 2000 or 2001. There are a few other symbols and dates in the conc rete walks. They never made sense (did not loo k like birthdays or anniversaries ) but maybe they match something on the inscription.

This looks much older than 20 years. I think it might have been some kind of vintage plate? I could be wrong though.

Thanks Toni. The two horse number threw me. But judging from that inscription the previous owner of the house might have picked it up from an antique store and left it there for unknown reasons.

Something else too add. Last week, I posted an article abut my dog, Toby, and a pair of ceramic apples that he dug up in our garden. The apples were buried about two feet down, and we have no idea why they were put there.

This may have nothing to do with the inscription, but it is also curious.

I showed this to my wife, a native Chinese language speaker. She said something similar. The writing on the left is the 4th year, 3rd month of like a dynasty. Also she was able to make out the 2 horses thing. She was very unclear. Just something like 2 horses courtyard. Best she could do.

Here is a picture of the ceramic apples.

They were buried in the garden. I also posted a story about them last week under “Toby’s Apples.”

I wonder if it is not some sort of superstition ritual? Some kind of feng  shui remedy?

We were also wondering if it was some sort of ritual, or maybe something for good luck, but I can’t find anything on line about “two buried apples.”

They could have hired hacks who told them BS. Truth is feng shui is more “make it up as you go along” than a rules  based thing.
