There are several possibl e explanations . All of them are pretty funny. (a) Tarzan has nothing to trumpet with like the elephants, so as the elephants are charging and trumpeting, he feels like he has to make a similar noise. (b) Tarzan is honking the horn much as somebody driving a car dangerously. (c) Tarzan is leading a cavalry charge of sorts, but not blowing a trumpet to do so. I think it may be a combination of all of the above.

I know, it’s just a funny image. I don’t know that Gary even had a logical reason behind the humor. “Make way for the elephants! *honk honk* WHEEEE!”

I think it’s that Tarzan is honking the horn to make a loud noise that will startle and scare his enemies, which is funny because any sound he might make should be insignificant alongside the thundering terror of stampeding elephants.
