I had one of those in about 1988. V8-302 CID and I think it made 120 hosepower.

Ok that’s cool because Foxbody is still nicer.

Even in that condition I wouldn’t feel bad if it went to the scrapper.

I’ve got a picture somewhere of an absurdly immaculate Mustang II Ghia that was at Nashville C&C. We’re talking “includes brand-new-looking washer pump bag” immaculate.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I think it was black, but otherwise identical.  It stood out to me, because I passed it on the highway on the way there, and then saw it pull in while we were there.

Wow, a Ghia, classy. I’m sure the driver must drink only the finest of Champales.

Yes. I didn’t own the Mustang II for long. I sold it to a guy who figured out that the engine timing wasn’t set up correctly and was slowing the car down. That was not an era of much success at much of anything in my life.

“I sold it to a guy who figured out that the engine timing wasn’t set up correctly and was slowing the car down.”

Which might mean it was making less power than my Honda Fit (109HP)!

I’m the rare individual that doesn’t think that the Mustang II was completely atrocious. However, that pretty much only applies to Mustang IIs that have aggressive bumper kits...really just the Cobra IIs, and similar looks. THIS look here, especially with the landau top? Just not sporty-looking enough to really carry the Mustang name. I mean...really, this is just a tarted up Pinto. (Yes yes, every Mustang II was a tarted up Pinto. The original Mustang was a tarted up Falcon and every Fox body Mustang was a tarted up Fairmont.)

(I am aware that there are Fox bodies that are pretty barebones to the point that they also lose their sportiness. However, I have covered the Fox body extensively. In short...if your Fox body Mustang is going to be completely devoid of everything that makes it sporty...why didn’t you just buy a Fairmont coupe?)

This probably isn’t the same one, unless it followed me all the way back to Nebraska

Heh, my 24 hours of lemons teammate races a Mustang II. We somehow managed to get a hold of the Cobra body kit, but he didn’t want it or something. It ended up going on my Pontiac Sunbird (also a lemons car)

Fairmonts don’t have to be beigemobiles, even if painted beige. Just ask Eric.

How such a small car that’s supposed to be sporty can look like it’s on casters is beyond me. And that front end, with its long overhang and high bumper must have been about as aerodynamic as a mud fence.

While the II has its own quite rabid fanbase (literally, I think they were bitten by rats and have rabies) , and the car sold quite well during the 1973-74 Energy Crisis, it was a total bomb and it sullied the Mustang nameplate.

The Monza was better. Their own Capri was better. The Plymouth Arrow was better. The Pacer was better. Not to mention the Camaro, Firebird, or even the Challenger, Barracuda, and Javelin in ‘74.

Fans scream “rack-and-pinion steering” but the Pacer had that, too. They scream about how popular it was... initially... until its 4th model year when the much older Camaro AND Firebird each individually outsold the II.

Ford pretty much tried to turn the Mustang into a subcompact personal luxury coupe in this era, as they tried with the Cougar as an intermediate personal luxury coupe. What a turd.
