Say it with me, German reliability.

I say buy a 1996 Camry sedan LE so you have something to bounce around in while you keep fixing every new thing that breaks on this boi every two days.

you sure it’s not the blower resistor?
![]() 06/06/2019 at 12:31 |

What is this and why is the light switch to the right of the steering wheel?

Do you know how I know you’re a long time E46 owner. Well I already knew, but if I didn’t it would be because of this.

It’s actually been pretty awesome to me. In five years there’s only been two occasions where it’s malfunctioned in a way where it can’t be driven. Both times were less than $200 in parts. That’s better than most 20yo cars.
Betcha when I pull the blower it's gonna be the original one, meaning it lasted 20 years and 260k miles.

Could be, but there were no signs of malfunction prior. I just turned the car on and it didn’t work. Don’t blowers usually lock y ou out of lower speeds or something when they fail?

2000 528i and that’s the driving light switch. The main light switch is on the other side.

Welp, that's not bad! I still find most of my German car owning experience to be one of constant repairs/maintenance.

Thats were I have to agree with gettingoldercarguy . My HVAC has been nothing but a pain on my e39. First the HVAC control panel goes out, then the heat water pump (the V8s have spare water pumps just to pump it through the heater core), then my AC fan locked up on me. And its still not right. At lights the condenser (edit: compressor) will lock up every once and awhile.
Also Its more common for the final stage unit/blower motor resistor to go out than the blower.

..... that is very very strange

I’m not. I’ve never owned a E46

Usually when the resistor goes you get locked into on fan speed right? I’ve got no fan at all.
I’ve replaced: water pump, radiator, t-sta t, a hose, aux water pump, and condensor fan

I bought a new blower resistor for my Corolla like four years ago and still haven’t gotten around to installing it. So first gear in the blower still does not work.

Or as some in the BMW world put it, just another design feature.

It's quite sensible. Keeps the wiper and signal stalks uncluttered.
![]() 06/06/2019 at 14:02 |

Of course it did , because now you’re actually using the blower.

I guess. My Audi and my GTO they are all one dash switch to the left

But my dash is s y m m e t r i c a l

People have reported mixture, the normal fail mode is fan speed doesnt change or will randomly change with out being adjusted and can sit at full blast.
But there are times where it just wont come on at all, in that link here is one of the comments
Dont get me wrong it still could be the blower motor. 20 years on anything can start to happen. And there are some who still had to replace the blower motor. Its just hard to diagnose with old electronics without pulling everything out.

But I do not like
![]() 06/06/2019 at 15:08 |

I'll be replacing the resistor first just cause it's significantly cheaper and easier

a l w a y s check the fuse first! That being said, recently had to repair the wiring to my blower fan once I got my a/c working. Fun times.

Wasn't the fuse.

I feel your pain. I despise the designers/engineers at Honda/Acura because of how stupid the MDX is. Who the fuck puts daytime running lights on the bottom of a car and they’re inboard of what might be foglights?
I hate my wife’s car even more than I used to.

I have two new spare blower resistors for an E46 if it’s compatible you can have one for free.
