2011 with a quad core i5 and the original box! Now I know it’s not the most modern machine but it is certainly useful and in my opinion still a striking design. I had some ram lying around, so the 4gb it came with is is now 16gb, really makes a difference. For $100 it’s a very nice internet machine.

Very clean considering it’s age. Not that an iMac is exposed to the same abuse a Macbook would be but considering it’s age i’d say it’s worth it’s spot on my desk. I might end up selling it but I’m really enjoying it now. I feel like I’m still getting the experience of owning one of these nice machines for a tenth of what a new one costs.

Now it has displaced my more capable and modern system, but now that I’m done with school (technically one internship away from graduating, any of y’all know anyone in furniture design that wants to hire an intern? portfolio= johntl.com) I don’t really need a CAD beast for sending out resumes, and I like that I have more desk space for tinkering projects or sketching. As soon as I move out of my folk’s place the plan is to have a proper workstation, and then this iMac in a living space for day to day internet tasks.

Sounds like NP to me! Install an SSD from Amazon for $29:

It’s really tempting but it also needs some sorta ssd adapter with a temperature sensor to work with MacOS, which is like another $40. The HD it has now is a 7200rpm one, so it’s not the absolute worst. I’m also satisfied with the current performance.

Still very tempting.

It’s also a lot less pressing of a concern with 16 GiB of RAM

Yeah that really woke the machine up. I took it from my old laptop that I use to run a CNC machine. No real need for 32bg in a machine that just runs one Java program, probably doesn’t even need the 16gb I left in it.

I don’t do spinning platter HDD for the OS partition any more.

That’s surprising. I’d assume Apple is using a standard SATA port for their spinning disk HDD , and I think every modern SSD (every one I’ve used anyway) has a built in temperature sensor.

I’m still rocking an early 2009 iMac . I’m on 10.11.6, which I think is the latest OS it can handle. My brother and I put an SSD in it a couple of years ago, and all storage is handled by a peripheral 2TB mirrored drive. But it’s still working great. As far as the newest iMacs, the small one is too small and the big one is too big. My 24" is perfect. So yeah, that’s a great find.

24" seems to be a sweet spot for me too. I use two 24"AOC monitors with my CAD workstation. That being said I love the really big 27" iMac, but appreciate how compact this 21.5" one is. I don’t have a picture of my desk with the two 24" monitors and my laptop dock on it, but it was tight. The iMac takes up like a quarter of the space, and can easily be moved if I need more space.

I bought a MacBook Pro in 2010 . I put an SSD in about three years after that. A little later I removed the optical drive and replaced it with the original hard drive for additional storage.   It still runs perfectly well for my needs.

I would want to replace it with another Mac when that time comes , but there just isn’t one currently on sale that really draws me in. The new Mac Pro seems to be a step in the right direction though. Hopefully its a good sign for the future of the MacBook Pro.

My wife’s 2013 Macbook Air was starting to act it’s age recently, the battery was to the point of only running the computer for a few minutes.

But, when I compared the stats for a brand new Air, there was no reason to upgrade. It was almost identical for stats, but with less ports (Only a single USB-C).  So I replaced the battery with one from iFixit, and it’s literally like a brand new machine again.

Intel just did a damn fine job with the chips in that era. Even PCs around that time can be seen kicking, not just Macs.

I have a couple of old ones myself. There is no reason to not use them as long as they run. The obsolescence is artificially imposed from outside by software. Apple itself stops supporting certain operating system versions after a while, and then my institution says I can’t have anything earlier than El Capitan on their network because it doesn’t work with the latest versions of their server software and security requirements, blah blah.

For a home machine though, you’ve got something that will last a long time.

I’m still running an iMacI bought new for the family in 2012,  albeit upgraded with an SSD for the sake of zippiness. Apple doesn’t support it anymore and it won’t connect to the things I need it to so it’s full time running Windows 10, which is fully supported. It’s probably the best windows machine I’ve had.

I have a late 2012 27" iMac and just increased the ram to 16GB also. Id say for $100 you found yourself a sweet deal. The only thing ever do is edit some RAW format photos and it does that job well.
