Back in January, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about how the door handle cap on my rear right door disappeared one day. It seemed that the plastic that the bolt was screwed into broke off. I couldn’t figure out what broke it.

Today, I went to open the driver side passenger door, and the cap on that side broke in the same way. It looks like it’s just a shoddy part, and it broke on its own. JimZ’s guess may have been right that it was cracked on installation at the factory and snapped with time.

I took the screw out, and the broken plastic bit fell into the door. I can’t find the part anywhere online. I’m going to have to order it from Kia for another $60.

My car also had very shitty door handle ends... the driver’s side one broke. I fixed it with, erm, tape.

Before you spend any money on a new part, try to repair what you have. You might be able to fix it with some Plas tiFix. Just be sure to lubricate the bolt so the PlastiFix doesn’t adhere to it. If they can make new fairing tabs with the stuff, you should be able to repair that plastic bit.

I had been thinking I’d try to glue the molded plastic part together and screw it back on. I figure it would have failed again, but then I’d be no worse off. The option was taken away when I neglected to catch the broken piece from falling into the door upon removing the screw.

These are small things on a first model year car when you consider how much they got right.  Unfortunately, on a limited run luxury car, there won’t be much you can replace at a pick-n-pull or through ebay, and OEM parts are gonna be pricey.

I did velcro tape, the sort for EZ passes that need to withstand lots of heat

I didn’t know you could do that.  But my quick search says the PlastiFix kit is $50.  Not much savings.

Ah, but you can do BOTH sides for that $50!

Wait.... I just went back and read where the other cap disappeared. Ah, well.

On the other hand, e xperience tells me there is a good chance the two front door ones may go eventually. :(

interesting - maybe tightened too tight at the factory and cracked or something?

I once removed the toilet tank lid and used a rebent wire hanger to (temporarily) replace the broken pull chain, and replaced the broke  red brake lense on my old XJ with a spray paint cap, I almost look forward to these fixes on my beaters, but also fancy cars & OEM fixes are not my thing.

Sounds likely.

Yeah, on an old car, you feel free to experiment.

How old is your car? 6 years old is old enough for some hacks. But if it still blue books for more than $ 20K, OEM fixes.

That almost seems like the kind of thing that could be 3D printed...

It might. I’ve never done it. It is just plastic.

Interesting. I have this problem with one corner of my front bumper cover.

Fix it, document the repair, and then post it so we can all give you kudos!

I KNOW it can be 3D printed...we just need either a CAD model of it or the measurements. But then to chrome plate it is a different story. It wouldn’t be an easy task. But, we may be able to 3D Print a piece that fits inside it to make it attache again, with more authority....but yeah, the missing one is no help here...good luck dude.
