The inline sixes are easier to maintain and supposedly better to drive.

Gotcha! Did you ever review your BMW on Oppo? I would like to read what you think of it.

The short of it is: Best car I’ll ever own and that makes me sad because I know it’s not gonna last forever.
People balk at E39s because they’re expensive to maintain but parts really aren’t that bad. It’s the labor that kills you. If you work on it yourself it doesn’t cost much more to own than any other 20yo used car. Be willing to put in a little effort, and it’ll reward you every time you drive it.
On the V8 not only is the engine much heavier, they made the front subframe out of steel instead of the aluminum on 6cyl cars. As a result the V8s have a front biased weight distribution while 6cyls have 50/50.
I haven’t driven a 540i but reviews say they don’t dance as well and are better suited for highway cruising.

Good to know! The E39 (530 or 540), a newish WRX with an intake, downpipe, exhaust and a SS are on my short list of cars if I need a bigger car (I know there is a sizable difference in cost )

Oooo did not know that about the 540.
I guess if I still own the Vette when/if I get a E39, it would make sense to get the 530

If you do shop for one look at post-facelift cars, 2001 onwards. M ost of the pre-facelift options were made standard and the manual transmissions got a 6th gear.
