I recently found out that I’m considered an Italian citizen as a result of Italy’s “Blood Law”. Basically, Italy automatically grants citizenship to the kids of Italian citizens, even if they’re born outside of the US and never request it. It originally only applied paternally, but allowed women to pass on citizenship starting in 1948. So if your great grandparent was Italian, then you grandmother birn in the US was Italian, and so was your parent (if born after 1948) and so are you.
Once you prove to the Italian government that an ancestor was an Italian citizen, they’ll issue you a passport. You can complete the process yourself or hire a company to help you.
Have any other Oppos hired a company to do this? I’ll definitely be applying for an Italian passport, and am wondering if anyone has a trusted company to use.
Grazie!

Is Italy trying to attract expats?

Not that I know of. This has been apart of Italian Law since 1861 which is when the modern state of Italy was formed. Nothing has changed since then except for allowing mothers to pass on citizenship in 1948. Figured I’d lock in my Italian citizenship and cheap college tuition for my kids before they decide to change the law.

Does this mean you can use this new-found Italian-ness to ship me free classic 500s and Piaggio Apes?
