I took a friend for a drive today in the Exocet. We did a run up to Point Reyes and Bodega Bay. Honestly, we only got maybe 1-2 total minutes out of 6 hours of driving where there wasn’t some bonehead in an SUV not using the turnouts. We should station flag people at the turnouts on highway 1 to flag in anyone with a line of cars behind them. It’s the start of tourist season so I’m not actually expecting better, but that doesn’t keep me from bitching about it. If someone in your family is visiting California, please school them on turnouts.

In that 1-2 minutes however, I did notice that the 7 PSI I took out of the tires last night did wonders for handling. 32 PSI under 1500lbs was bone shattering. 25 PSI - so much better. Ride is better, car sticks better in corners. I’ll hold here for now since it’s a street car. Some of the Exocet folks run 17 PSI in autocross but that’s a little aggressive for the street in my opinion.

In related news, if you’re in Point Reyes Station, check out Cowgirl Creamery. They have an SF location in the Ferry Building as well. Good stuff all around. Their Mac N Cheese was the jam.

A great way to set ideal tire pressure is to simply drive slowly through a wide puddle in a parking lot and proceed straight out past it. S top 20 or 30 feet out and inspect the tire marks. If they’re narrower than the full width of tread, you gotta let some air out.

Haha, I like it. Now I need to find a way of doing that in a place with no rain and in a car without any protection from said puddle :)

About 3 months ago was hwy 1 prime time, from Guer neville to leggett was largely clear with only a few cars. Though rainy season doesn’t inspire confidence when theres a greasy hairpin followed by a cliff

The going fast around corners car equivalent to that is paying attention to how far tires are rolling over on the outside edge of the tread under cornering load. Depending on camber and the like, something in the ballpark of 20-25psi hot is probably about right.

Chalk the treads. Get some sidewalk chalk, find a empty parking lot, apply the chalk to the full width of the tread, then drive in a straight line. You're looking for even wear as indicated by the chalk rubbing off. Rubbing off the inside and not the outside means too much psi. The outsides rubbing off but not the inside means too little psi.

Definitely agreed that low-mid 20s seems to be a good spot for these cars. I’m still gradually stepping pressures down to see what I can get away with , but to provide one more data point, I’m currently down to 23-24 PSI cold for normal driving and 21 PSI hot for autocross on 245 BFG Rivals. Temperatures across the tread came out close to even at the most recent autocross event, but it also looked like I still had a little more tread available to use before they’d roll onto the sidewall, so some more testing is needed.

Gotcha. You’re running a more aggressive tire. I’m running some crappy S-Drives right now. Haha. I want to chew through them so I can swap to something stickier.
