I’m thinking about getting a new car, but there are so many choices, so I thought I’d hear Oppo’s thoughts. If you had 30-4ok USD to spend for you daily driver, which car would you buy?

Edit: This would be for my daily driver and the commute is 40 miles each way, but I have to drive through LAX traffic, so I want something relatively comfy with an automatic (heresy, I know). As fo r luxury, heated/cooled leather seats would be nice to have, but I can live without it.

Fuel economy is a decently high priority, but it’s not a deal breaker. That said I don’t want a V8, 2 too many spark plugs and ignition coils. 2 doors is the preference, but 4 doors is acceptable. Seating is just for me, I’m done giving peo ple rides XD

As for infotainment, I could care less, as long as it has an aux port, but I’ll take whatever niceties I can get.

Without your preferences this becomes difficult. How long is your commute? is it more city or highway? do you prioritize fwd awd or rwd? manual must or nice to have? How impostant is luxury/comfort over raw performance?

for a DD I would u sually go for used and try to get the best value for the dollar in terms of performance, comfort and luxury and tech.

I would recommned used M3/4 or used S5 coupe. Heard the RCs are nice as well.

I’ve had an F-Type, I loved it but would not get the manual again. The shift to first to second is terrible, and well known to be terrible always. I am actually also looking between a G70, Stinger, Evora, Continental.  So if you pick one of those let me know how you like them.

I would need to know a little more about what features are important to you. Do you need 4 doors, or are 2 fine? Does it have to be a V8, or would a 6 be acceptable? How much long distance driving without corporate reimbursement is involved (eg, is fuel economy a priority)? What sort of comfort/convenience/luxury features can’t you live without - leather, heated/cooled seats, a good infotainment system, etc.? Also, seats, do you need 5, or will 4 be fine?

Without knowing your actual needs it’s hard to say.

I will still say my top two would be the Lotus or Jag.

4c! 4c! 4c! I am so obsessed still 8 years after the concept that it’s my Miata. As in “ 4c is always the answer.” But theres no cute ac ronym.

Is it perfect? Not even a little. Would I instantly regret it as a DD? A bsolutely! Is there any modern car I’d take over it? Not a chance in hell! Let my broken decision making logic lead to your potential regret and get the 4c!

Just don’t take the first one to get under $35k. That’s about my budget  and I really think end of this summer one or two will be in that range finally (saw one at 35 in March/April already but I wasn’t ready)

E550 Mercedes with a warranty because 445 ft lb at 1600 rpm and no turbo lag and that’s exactly what I did a year ago .

But among that group the Parsh. They’re brilliant.

It’s not on your list but I would probably go with a Giulia. 40K would be pushing it for a new one but would be okay with a barely used one.

See my reply to ranwhenparked, but this would be my daily driver, so comfort aan luxury win out over performance, so automatic is preferred.

I cannot deny I’ve always wanted an actual M car to call my own, but if I got one, I’d have buyer’s remorse for not having chosen another car on the list; hell I’d have buyer’s remorse regardless of whatever car I chose. That’s why I posted in the f irst place.

Plus I don't want a hatchback.

Wait, why’s the Cayman  more reasonable than the 4C?

That does sound appealing. I’ll admit I didn’t put a used Merc on that list because I’m not too familiar with their models. Plus I find their latest cars look like upside down baked potatoes.

The 4C is a first-generation design by a brand that’s calling card is horrendous reliability. It’s basically an exotic sold at upper entry-level luxury car pricing. It’s harder to get in and out, visibility is poor by comparison, sound deadening is fairly absent, engine is a bit rough, and the car is not particularly c omfortable. There’s also less room for stuff. The Cayman on the other hand is a tried and true sporty daily, that’s easy to just hop in a drive, whether it’s 5 minutes to the store, or 500 miles on a long weekend trip.

I just talked myself out of the Cayman. It's the boring choice. The Miata of of the MD crowd, if you will

Used M2? Might be a bit above the upper bounds, but they would fit your requirements pretty well!

IMO the only way to avoid buyers remorse is to get the Evora or Cayman. But based on your requirements what you need is a A5 coupe/ sportback Prestige Trim 2017 or newer which is all new . Prestige is t op of the line model that has heated and cooled seats Audi virtual cockpit and adaptive cruise for La traffic . with 250ish HP it’s no slouch does 0- 60 in 5.7. I have driven the A4 version of this.

what you want, only you can decide after test drving all these.

Hmm, I’m in a similar situation, with a 45 mile commute. Except mine is mostly country back roads through the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I ended up with a V6 Camaro RS, provides a decent mix of fuel economy and power and it handles better than any domestic car I’ve owned before, which is nice for those sorts of roads. I’m not ready to commit to a 2-seater for my only car, so the back seat and reasonable trunk are nice to have.

However, two cars ago now, I had a Challenger SXT Plus , which I liked a bit better. Softer suspension, didn’t handle as well, but did an amazing job at soaking up bumps and pot holes. Cavernous trunk, plush, comfortable seats, and I took it on many extended road trips (included down the e astern seaboard to Key West) and with the cruise control set, it really did deliver 30mpg on the highway. UConnect is a great system, and the ventilated seats were nice on hot days. Not really a fast car, but it looks like one, and in traffic, it doesn’t really matter.

Honestly, if I was shopping in that price range, I'd take a look at one of those.

They’re not drivers cars - my E class understeers more than a BMW does ( but tbh less than an Audi), but the previous generation E class is very reliable and can be had pretty cheap now.
