After some polls we decided Mallorca would be the place to visit this autumn. This little article will give more information, include a poll and asks for volunteers who want to join!
What is an Oppomeet?
I can give you an explanation, but I think a description of our last meet is more effective. Look no further:

Why Mallorca?
We had a poll a month or two ago for a potential summer meet and a potential autumn meet. Mallorca won for the autumn destination.
Mallorca? Is that something you can eat?
Mallorca is a Spanish party island in the Mediterranean sea. Population: 850,000. It’s also said to be driving paradise. Off-season, when the tourists are gone and the hotels, car rental agencies and restaurants struggle to find customers is the obvious sweet spot. The weather will still be nice enough (20 degrees C) with little rain. Statistically speaking.
There is lots of hiking potential here too. From long trips to fat clumsy tourist friendly spots.
Mallorca has 2 mountain ranges, the highest accessible peak at 1,364 m (4,475 ft). As you can see on the map a few pictures above the north of the island is very hilly.

Some pictures stolen from 4muddyfeet’s Mallorca oppo article. I would recommend everyone to read it:

There is drinking
There are old buildings
There’s a circuit for karts
When?
Well, late October, early November. We will schedule activities for Octob er 31st (thursday) until November 3rd (Sunday) . An exact date will need to be set. That’s why we have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . We’re thinking of a 4 day trip over a weekend, although you can obviously add as many days as you please.
What is the main plan?
Everyone can chose to do whatever they prefer obviously, but the main idea was to rent some cheap small car (preferably everyone a similar one), set up a route and drive that through the mountains/hills in a slow-car-fast way. Additionally we tend to plan some cultural activities in between and socialize at night. We might plan a regularity rally as well.
Hold on, a Spanish island, isn’t that way too expensive?
No. We’re looking at late October, early November here. The few months a year the island is not overrun by tourists. A two-way airline ticket from Europe (incl. UK) can be had for less than €100. From the US? Whatever it costs to fly to the cheapest random European airport, plus that ticket to Mallorca. Total for the US starting at €400. Small rental car for 4 days from a random big international rental agency? <€100. A place to stay? When you share a double room, €25 a night a person will be possible, but assume €35-40. For that latter price you can have a 3 or maybe 4 star hotel, breakfast included. So, for a European you’d have flight + personal rental + hotel for 3 nights for a realistic €300 total . Maybe in the €250 range. Not bad for a trip like that, right? This is excluding food and fuel, but that won’t be overly steep either.
Additional info:
If you don’t want a hotel you can rent a holiday home like this one (6 bedrooms, 11 beds) for €200 a night (taken from airbnb)
Rentals are cheap (Screenshot selection: Europcar, Palma de Mallorca airport, November 1st-4th 2019). Price is for the whole trip, not per day.
Current 2-way airfare prices to Mallorca. I only picked nov 1-4 as an example:
Munich: €67
London: €101
Nantes (France): € 99
Berlin: € 40
Barcelona: € 32
Budapest (1 stop): € 132
Vienna: € 90
Brussels (1 stop): €118
Stockholm: € 184
Rome: € 54
Manchester: € 97
What’s not to like?
So come one, don’t be afraid and join us on Mallorca.

I’ve been in 6 countries during the oppomeets (UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Netherlands) plus a few more just to get there (Switzerland, Luxembourg, maybe Italy?). We just like to travel a lot :) Distances might be shorter, but for me Wales 2018 was 900 miles one way plus the English channel.
It helps if you can get time off work .
Please join us though. You could check how much a ticket to a random EU city in oct/nov would cost for you. From there Mallorca would probably be another €100.

Driving adventures. A nd some find Appalachia to be exotic.
But, dang, I wish I had available vacation time to join this crew in Mallorca, that looks amazing.

Can't, unfortunately work is pretty demanding, especially with me being the new guy. I'd love to go otherwise.

That looks spectacular.
A irfare is cheap within Europe, too.
I can’t stretch the 700ish euros 2-way it’d cost me from Canada to Europe though.

Clearly you need to come to a PNW drive. We've lost at LEAST one person each time! Sometimes for hours!

New York Times stole your idea (36 Hours in Majorca) https://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/29/travel/29hours.html
“Set yourself up with a rental car (there’s a lot of driving to be done on this island) and prepare to be hypnotized by ancient terraced landscapes with twisted olive trees, the tiny medieval villages and the extraordinary food and wine.”
“Head southeast on the vertiginous coastal road called MA-10 to the town of Banyalbufar; the trip may be the loveliest and the most terrifying drive you’ll ever undertake.”

I’d love to do this, but taking a $700 4 day vacation while leaving the Misses with two children who tend to fight when they get bored might just push her over the edge..
That said, it sounds like a heck of a good time..

I totally understand that. One thing to consider though is that you probably need a stop over at a random European airport. This can take a few hours, but could also be a number of days , so you could turn it into something longer while not spending any more (on airline tickets).

Which means I could tick London, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon or the Rhine valley off the bucket list and still enjoy some excellent driving fun in Mallorca. Goodness gracious, it sure is tempting

Exactly! You could even take your wife and kids to one of those locations and leave them there while you fly to Mallorca for a few days ;)
